Marian Anita (Williams) Campbell 

November 28, 1933 - December 16, 2023 

Marian Anita Williams Campbell passed peacefully at her home in Ama, Louisiana on December 16, 2023. Marian was born in Ama, Louisiana on November 28, 1933 to the late Samuel Williams, Sr., and Josephine Haydell. She was the youngest of three children, the late Samuel Williams, Jr., and the late Shirley Mae Williams Matthews.

Chet, as she was affectionately called, was married to the late Esta Campbell and of this union were two children, Giselle Annette Campbell Johnson (Conrad) and Nyron Jerome Campbell.

Marian was educated in Ama and Hahnville, Louisiana with graduation from G. W. Carver High School in Hahnville, Louisiana. She went off to further her education at Southern University in Baton Rouge where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree. She returned to St. Charles Parish to begin her career in education, teaching elementary school. While teaching at Carver she transitioned into the classroom work of Home Economics. She remained there until she accepted a transfer following desegregation to Destrehan High School where she was the first Black teacher there from 1967 to 1975.

In 1975 she took a sabbatical and enrolled at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas to pursue a Master’s Degree in Vocational Education. Upon completion she returned to St. Charles Parish School District to teach at Hahnville High School. During her tenure with the SCPSD she traveled extensively with the State of Louisiana Department of Education capturing information that would be brought back to the district.

She was a devout Catholic and attended St. Mark Catholic Church in Ama. During her evening hours, she supported her church and community by teaching religion classes at Luling Elementary School as well as her home. She worked with the Catholic Young Organization (CYO) of her Parish and taught adult education at G.W. Carver High School. After retirement from the School District, she missed working with children so, that she opened a small day care facility, where she continued to support young parents in the Parish. When asked why, she simply stated “the children needed her.” After the closure of the daycare, she finally began enjoying retirement, you could find her at the gym working on her girlish figure, or on a trip someplace at some time with as she calls them “her crew.”

Marian was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and godmother. She leaves to morn her children, Giselle, Nyron, grandchildren Suzanna, Jessica, Jade, Taylor, extended family Diana, Patrick, Shannon a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
