Roll Call Tribute

Alan Love Jr. '64 July 16, 2025 6:55 PM updated: July 16, 2025 7:12 PM

Alan Carson Love

April 2, 1937 - April 22, 2023

Alan Carson Love, 86, of Cameron, Texas passed from this earth on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at home. He was born April 2, 1937, in Dallas, the son of Alan Cavitt Love and Lina Rose (Carson) Love. He lied to us all. He routinely assured us he would live past one hundred.

Alan graduated from Schreiner Institute in Kerrville in 1955. He entered the United States Air Force, served honorably for four years in the Air Force Band, and was discharged in October 1959. He entered Texas A&M University in 1960, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1964. In 1966, he graduated from Texas A&M with a Master of Arts in English.

Alan taught English at San Antonio College through 2005, retiring as a Professor Emeritus after 39 years. But his real love was engineering better ways to do things, including building his own Class A motorhome. He was a man of varied interests and passions.

An accomplished musician, he played nearly all brass instruments and the upright string bass. Antique cars - especially the full line of 1946 Mercurys were his reason for getting up in the morning. Giving tours of his shop and sharing his plans for it was one of his favorite things. He loved collecting Depression glass and had obtained all the Eastlake Victorian furniture appropriate for his Victorian home in Cameron long before he and Jean were able to purchase the home in 2007. Alan was a master trip planner composing Amtrak "Grand Tours" and annual trips to the Hershey, Pa., antique car part swap meet.

Alan was especially proud to be a descendant of David Hall Love, who served in the battle of San Jacinto under Sam Houston.

Alan is survived by his wife of 28 years, Jean Schara; two daughters, Roberta Ellen (Andy) Brockman of Lewisville and Alyne Love of Austin; two granddaughters, Ashley (Daniel) Rohovit, and Katy (Ashton) Nowicki, and two great-granddaughters, Brayley Love Nowicki and Taytum Nikole Nowicki.
