Michael Earl McMahan
August 16, 1956 - May 11, 2025
Mike was a native Houstonian, and a fifth generation Texan. He grew up in the Ayrshire subdivision on Underwood St. With two other Mikes on the street they roamed the neighborhood and the Gulley next to the railroad tracks together. Mike attended Mark Twain Elementary and Pershing Junior High. At Pershing he played the trombone, as both his father and brother had in their youth. Mike then attended Bellaire High School where he played in the band and was a drum major.
He enrolled at Texas A&M University in its School of Engineering. He also played in the Texas Aggie Band for four years. In the summer after his freshman year it was discovered that he had Type 1 diabetes, a condition that plagued him for the balance of his life.
Mike graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he quickly obtained his certification as a Registered Professional Engineer. During his career he participated in projects in Texas, Louisiana, Florida as well as internationally in Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. His family will always remember him when we see some of the local projects he worked on: the Transco Tower, Metro expansion project, St Paul’s United Methodist Church and Brazos Bend State Park.
He participated in church and social organizations. Barely meeting the height requirements, he joined the Tall Club of Houston. In one of the Club's activities he met a young lady named Rebecca June. A courtship ensued and Mike and Rebecca were married in June 1995 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church where Mike had been baptized as a child. The young family flourished, soon a son and a daughter were born. Over the years, many dogs and cats joined them.
Unfortunately, Mike's health deteriorated as diabetes took its toll.
Mike was predeceased by his paternal grandparents Earl and Ethel Greenwade McMahan of Whitney, Texas and his maternal grandparents John Harry and Grace Greenwood Speed of Houston, Texas and his parents Harry K. and Anne Elizabeth Speed McMahan, his parents in law, Franz and Celia June of Lake Jackson, Texas and his brother in law L. Walton (Walt) Puckett, Jr.
Mike is survived by his best friend and companion, Rebecca June McMahan, his son David Eston McMahan and his fiancée Erin O'Dea of Houston, and his beloved daughter Emily Anne McMahan of Dallas, Texas. Other survivors are his brother Harry Kimball McMahan Jr., his wife, Beverly, their daughter Melinda McMahan and their son, Harry (H.K.) McMahan III, his fiancée Stevie Bubeck, and his son Harry (Mac) McMahan, IV of Katy, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Grace Anne McMahan Puckett, her daughter Kim Puckett Solley and her children, Kaitlyn Grace Solley and Tyler Walton Solley, and her daughter Karen Elizabeth Puckett and fiancé Michael Fryer, her daughter Paige Puckett Tumbleson and her husband Tyler and Kylie Evelyn Schehl. Surviving Mike are also his sister in law, Mary June and her daughter Celia Rose June. Mike leaves a host of friends, cousins and his Aggie comrades.
Mike has joined the legions of Fightin’ Texas Aggie bandsmen forming at the North end zone of Kyle Field, ready to win halftime. Whoop!
