Jay Stephen Mangum, born November 20, 1949, in Wadesboro, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, in Kingwood, Texas, surrounded by his loving family. Jay was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose warmth, humor, and adventurous spirit touched everyone he knew.
Jay earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Texas A&M University in 1973. He achieved his pilot’s license at the age of 17 and later received certification in Funny Car and Dragster racing from the Frank Hawley Drag Racing School in 1985. He served Otis Elevator Company as a loyal employee for 34 years, from 1973 to 2007, holding regional management positions. Jay’s passions were as diverse as his talents—he cherished his family, photography, birding, drag racing, the great outdoors, travel and college football.
Jay is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Janice Mangum; his sister, Janet Crain (Gary Crain); his sons, Brian Mangum (Allyson Mangum) and Matt Mangum (Lindsay Mangum); and his daughter, Jennifer Hawkes (Greg Hawkes). He was the proud grandfather of Isabel, Logan, and Everly (children of Brian and Allyson); Asher, Atlas, and Iris (children of Matt and Lindsay); and Lila and Lexi (children of Jennifer and Greg). Jay was preceded in death by his parents, Junius and Jacquelyn Mangum, and his granddaughter, Vivian Mangum.
A service to celebrate Jay’s life will be held at Darst Funeral Home, 796 Russell Palmer Rd, Kingwood, TX, on Saturday, June 14, at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Yosemite Conservancy (yosemite.org), reflecting Jay’s love for nature. Casual and colorful attire is encouraged in honor of Jay’s vibrant spirit.
Jay’s legacy of love, laughter, and adventure will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace.
