Eduardo A. "Eddie" Longoria
August 30, 1941 - December 20, 2022
Eduardo A. Longoria, 81, son of Edwardo D. and Susana Barton Treviño Longoria, passed away on December 20, 2022 due to complications of cancer and heart failure. Known to all his family and friends as Eddie, he was a lifelong resident of Mercedes, Texas. Eddie attended Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School through the eighth grade and went on to graduate from Mercedes High School in 1960. He graduated with a Bachelors' Degree in Education from Pan American College in 1965 and earned a Master's Degree in Education from Texas A&M University in 1974.
Eddie's passion in life was to teach and help his science students achieve their educational goals. He worked at Coakley Middle School for 42 years. He was highly dedicated to his work and was a firm believer that education is a vital key to a successful career in life. On many occasions Eddie worked overtime and went out of his way to mentor students. As a UIL instructor, he accompanied teams of his most gifted students to participate in UIL tournaments at the University of Texas - San Antonio. Several of his students received top honors in the science category. On other occasions, Eddie and other science faculty members and students traveled on school-sponsored field trips of the southwestern U.S., exploring, conducting experiments, and observing the topography of the land.
Eddie also had a profound passion for genealogy. He was a member of Las Porciones Genealogy Society of Edinburg and the RGV Hispanic Genealogical Society of Harlingen. He had extensive knowledge of his family history, especially the Longoria and Treviño families. He traced the Longoria family tree to Juan Miguel Longoria from Asturias, Spain and the Treviño family tree to Elder Barton of Ireland, who fought in the Battle of San Jacinto. He also maintained a collection of numerous historical records and photos from many years back. Eddie was a soft spoken, gentle and caring man who was more concerned about helping others than himself. He provided compassionate and loving end-of-life care for his mother Susana, his two brothers, Danny and Jimmy, his aunt Emma Treviño and his cousin Norma Guerra. Eddie is survived by one brother, Carlos Rene Longoria of San Diego, California.
