James K. "Jim" Bailey 

February 20, 1947 - April 2, 2025 

Dr. James K. Bailey, 78, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 2, 2025. He is survived by his wife Barbara, his dearly beloved son James (Michele), beloved daughter Melisa B. Comrey (Dennis), precious grandson Calvin, and his two sisters, Candace and Linda. His parents, Clarence and Eleanor Bailey, preceded him in death.

Jim was a graduate of West Deptford High School in West Deptford, New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts, a Master’s degree in Forestry from the University of Virginia, and a PhD degree from Texas A&M University in Genetics. Jim cared deeply for the environment and led a purpose-driven life. He wrote and had published several scientific articles in Silvae Genetica journals.

He was employed by and retired from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for the state of Pennsylvania. While there, he developed a successful reforestation program. His unique planting practices became well-known and used statewide as well as around the world.

Jim was an invited and honored guest of the Republic of China and the University of Forestry Nanjing China, to lecture and advise how to best establish a reforestation program there, to choose planting sites, and species best suited for their locations. After his retirement, he was invited to Burma, Bali, and Temar to do the same work, He was awarded a Presidential Medal of Honor for his efforts through Winrock International.

Jim enjoyed family times, fishing, hunting, and traveling. He was an avid reader, historian, and loved sailing. He was a member of Hances Point Yacht Club in northeast Maryland. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
