William Alexander "Bill" Lewis
December 13, 1934 - December 27, 2023
A visitation for William “Bill” Alexander Lewis, 89, of Marshall, Texas will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Marshall, Texas with a memorial service to follow beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Church.
Bill was born December 13, 1934, in Marshall, Texas to Vernon Bolt Lewis, Sr., and Lucile Sullivan Lewis. He passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023, at The Hospice of East Texas in Tyler.
Bill graduated from Marshall High School in 1952. He attended Texas A&M University and was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He was drafted into the Army and was stationed in Detroit, Michigan where he met Florence Shuler. They were married on July 30, 1961 and remained happily married for 62 years. He and “Miss Flo” loved, and welcomed their friends, and their children’s friends, into their home for many years. In the words of the marriage service from the Book of Common Prayer, their home was a haven of blessing and of peace.
His professional career began in the insurance industry, and he worked at Continental, Hartford, and Texas Employers Insurance Agency. In 1979, he joined the law firm of Jones, Curry and Roth as a Legal Assistant and retired in 1999 after 20 years.
Bill was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He served as an acolyte there as a boy, was later an usher, a Vestry member, and a delegate to Diocesan Council. For years he was one of the oldest surviving parishioners at Trinity. He was also a member of Crime Stoppers of Marshall, and a member of Marshall Lakeside Country Club.
His favorite pastimes included Sabine River trips, and dove hunts, in the early years. His retirement years were spent playing golf with his friends at Lakeside County Club, and hours of fun at the “tonk” table there. He enjoyed history, especially reading and collecting books about WWII. He was blessed to have long-standing friendships from Marshall- from grade school to high school, and then from his time at A&M. From that group, yearly gatherings became a favorite event at Caddo Lake, where legendary poker games took place.
Fishing on Caddo with his father, and then with his son, son-in-law, and 3 grandsons was a source of real joy for him. He loved any chance he could get to watch the sunrise on Caddo, or to sit on the tailgate with his son and solve the world’s problems.
He was predeceased by his parents, Vernon Bolt, Sr. and Lucile Sullivan Lewis.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Flo; son, Duncan Lewis and his wife, Jennifer of Pearland; daughter, Cindy Nutt and her husband, Tim of Caddo Lake; grandsons, Logan Nutt of Houston, Alex Nutt of Austin, and Austin Nutt of Rochester Hills, Michigan; brother, Retired U.S. Army Maj.
