Roll Call Tribute

Robert "Bob" McKenry '80 May 29, 2025 12:14 PM updated: May 29, 2025 12:23 PM

Robert Ames "Bob" McKenry

January 26, 1957 - November 20, 2024

Robert "Bob" Ames McKenry, 67, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer. His struggle with Grade 4 metastatic cancer, diagnosed in January 2024, ended, freeing him from pain and suffering.

Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Linn Woodruff-McKenry; his daughter, Carlie Bowden McKenry; his brother, Carl McKenry (Sandra), sisters, Carol Ardolino and Mary McKenry; and a host of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Bob’s greatest joy was his daughter, Carlie. Their extraordinary bond was evident in his constant presence at her athletic events and recitals. Whether it was watching Carlie play field hockey for her college team in Kentucky or attending her other performances, Bob traveled near and far, always making her a priority. His devotion to her was a true reflection of his loving and caring nature and he always considered these moments his "happy place."

Growing up in Coral Gables, Florida, Bob forged lifelong friendships that will always remember the fun and unforgettable moments they shared.

Bob’s educational journey took him from The Lawrenceville School to Texas A&M University and ultimately, to the Texas A&M Maritime Academy, where he earned a degree in marine engineering. This is where he first met his wife of 42 years.

His passion for the sea began with a childhood cruise with his grandmother and led him to a rewarding career, particularly in engine room operations on tankers, where his expertise and commitment to excellence made a lasting impact.

For 35 years, Bob was a key member of the Dole Fresh Fruit Company, contributing his dedication and professionalism across North America. He earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues, not only for his work ethic but also for his generous and caring spirit.

Though Bob faced his illness with remarkable strength and dignity, he kept it private for much of his journey, sharing his condition with only a few close individuals until his final weeks. His grace throughout this difficult time reflected the private and resilient character he was known for.

Bob’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched—his daughter and wife, friends, colleagues, and anyone fortunate enough to have known him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask donations be made in Bob's name to the Delaware Humane Association, https://www.humaneanimalpartners.org/give/give-now/

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, from 2-3 PM at Strano & Feeley Family Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at 3 PM. To send online condolences please visit www.stranofeeley.com
