Wayne McAfee, M.D.

July 12, 1936 - February 24, 2025

Wayne McAfee M.D. F.A.C.O.G. went to be with the Lord on February 24, 2025 at the age of 88. Wayne was preceded in death by his father Leon Henderson McAfee, mother Lizzie Louise Parten McAfee, wife of 64 years, Colena McAfee and his son Bill McAfee. He is survived by his daughter Dianne Simmons and her husband Russell, three grandchildren Morgan Simmons, Madison Lawson and her husband Grant, Mallory Thompson and her husband Cade and step-grandson Justin Williams, his wife Ashley and their son Carter. Since he started practice as an Ob/Gyn in Conroe, Texas as one of the first specialist in the area, he brought thousands of lives into the world over his 54 years of practice.

Wayne was born on July 12, 1936 in Madisonville, Texas. Three years later, his family bought property in the small town of Pine Valley near Coldspring. Wayne attended school in Coldspring and graduated salutatorian and president of his senior class. He was slated to be the valedictorian, however, he didn't want to make a speech so he strategically missed several questions late in the term prior to graduation. He dated Colena McKellar while going to Coldspring High School. They continued their courtship as he attended The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas now known as Texas A&M University. Upon graduation in 1958, Wayne and Colena were wed and remained married until her death April 9, 2023. Wayne attended The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas graduating in 1962 then completing an internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Confederate Memorial Medical Center located in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1966. While completing his medical education, Wayne and Colena were blessed with their son Bill and daughter Dianne.

Wayne and Colena decided to move their family closer to family and friends and established a practice in Conroe, Texas starting his Obstetrics and Gynecology practice in 1966 as one of the first specialists in the area. He expanded the practice upon recruiting Dr. Alex Klein and Dr. Chuck White naming the practice Conroe Ob/Gyn and Associates. Many on his staff worked with him the majority of his career: Jackie McComb, Karin Bowles, Berma Luke and others. Jackie and Karin were key to the success of the practice until his retirement. He was known for his gentle bed side manor and kind demeanor. It was not uncommon for Wayne to accept produce and baked goods for services rendered. He also loved to cook and was known to try out recipes provided by his patients. His most loved recipe by his granddaughters was his cheesy eggs. Wayne had the pleasure of delivering grandchildren of grandparents he also delivered. As a tribute to his integrity, warm smile, great attitude, and sincere dedication to his patients over the years, in 2008, he received the Physician of the Year Award from St. Luke's Community Medical Center. It was an award he most cherished since it was voted on by the staff. Wayne had a long and distinguished career that spanned 54 years concluding in his retirement in 2020.

Wayne passed away peaceably at Conroe Health Care Center among his family and friends. The family thanks the staff of both Conroe Health Care Center and New Age Hospice for their exceptional care and kindness to Wayne. Per his request, his family will bury his ashes in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Coldspring, Texas in a private service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his honor to charitable organizations of your choice.
