George Chung Chen 

February 25, 1936 - March 20, 2024 

George Chung Chen, age 88 passed on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 in Sugar Land Texas.

George was born February 25, 1936 in Er-Chieh Township, I-Lan, Taiwan. He was the first son of Yuanqian Chen and Guiren Huang.

He graduated from National Taiwan University with a degree in Forestry. He served two years in the Taiwan military before immigrating to the United States in 1965 to pursue a masters degree in Wood Chemistry at Idaho State, PhD at Oregon State and post doctorate at Texas A&M University.

In September 1964 he married Marian (Wu Chu-Chih). They welcomed their oldest daughter May in 1966 and their son Johnny in 1973.

George and Marian eventually settled in Madison, Wisconsin where they raised their family. He worked at the US Forest Products Laboratory researching Boron-based wood preservatives, and fire retardants. He published multiple papers and held at least 8 patents before retiring in 2011 after 33 years. George and Marian eventually retired in Sugar Land, Texas. His greatest joy was spending time with his family.

George is survived by his loving wife, Marian, his two adult children and six grandchildren Jacob, Lily, Daisy, Oliver, Alex and Izzy.
