Born on January 26, 1958, in Texas City, Texas, Joan spent her early years in Dickinson, where she attended True Cross Catholic School and later Dickinson High School. Her passion for education led her to Texas A&M University, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education in 1980. Committed to lifelong learning and literacy, Joan furthered her studies at Virginia Tech University, obtaining a Master's Degree as a Reading Specialist in 2006.

Then later dedicated 20 years to teaching in Loudoun County, Virginia elementary schools, where she touched the lives of countless students with her patience and dedication. Her love for education extended beyond the classroom, as she inspired young minds to embrace reading and learning with enthusiasm.

Above all else, Joan was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family was the center of her world and brought her immense joy. She is survived by her loving husband Michael; daughters Tara Aylestock (Dan) and Lisa Nelson (Scott); and cherished grandchildren Sophia, Brantley, Emma, Logan, Wyatt, and Kaylee.
