Michael Allen "Mike" Thompson, COL USA (Ret)
June 30, 1950 - April 4, 2025
Dr. Michael Thompson passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, at the age of 74. Born in Baytown, Texas, on June 30, 1950, Mike was the second of four children (Tricia Barrett, David Thompson and Sue Wiley) born to Franklin Allen and Frances Herron Thompson.
A proud graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, Mike went on to attend Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and earned his BBA in Business Management. He dedicated 22 years of his life to serving in the U.S. Army, with assignments in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Kentucky, California, Hawaii, Korea, and Japan. He served as an Infantry Officer, an Army Ranger and as a Foreign Area Officer. His military career was marked by excellence and distinction. While stationed in Monterey, California, he earned a Master’s degree in National Security Affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School. Later, in Yokohama, Japan, Mike made history as the first U.S. Army officer to graduate from the Japanese Command and General Staff College—finishing first in his class, much to the surprise of his hosts. His intellect and insight were recognized in both English and Japanese publications.
After retiring from the Army as a Colonel, Mike and his family settled in Humble, Texas, where he became a partner in The Thompson Team, representing office furniture manufacturers in the Houston area. His passion for teaching led him to Humble ISD, where he taught from 2004 to 2007. In 2005, he earned his Doctor of Biblical Studies in Theology from the Masters Graduate School of Divinity in Evansville, Indiana.
In August of 2004, Mike and several other men started a church for the Kingwood area named Grace Reformed Baptist Church. For many years, he served as a pastor and a teacher for the church and helped deepen the faith of its members. His reminder in numerous sermons and teachings of the truth of 2 Corinthians 5:21 rings in the ears and hearts of many of its longtime members. Mike was tireless and relentless in his service to the church and its vibrant community today is a testament of his faithful work.
Mike spent 13 meaningful years teaching philosophy, systematic theology, and the Old and New Testament at The Covenant Preparatory School in Kingwood, TX, before retiring in 2021. He was a beloved teacher, known for his depth of knowledge, engaging style, and sincere faith. He thoroughly enjoyed building relationships with and teaching high school students. He is also the author of three books about Martin Luther, John Spilsbury and the need for the church to properly teach the Gospel.
Above all else, Mike was a family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Cynthia (Taylor) Thompson; and his daughters Elizabeth Silsby (Clif), Amy Weatherly (Shale), and Kathy Littlefield (Dirk). His nine grandchildren—Hira Evelyn Haseeb, Winston Silsby, Olivia, Lainey Belle, and Holton Weatherly, and Josiah, Naomi, Titus, and Gideon Littlefield—will always remember him as their cherished “Poppy.”
Mike’s legacy of wisdom, service, and faith will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
A Memorial Service at North Park Christian Church (1599 Northpark Drive, Kingwood, TX 77339) will be held on Thursday, April 17th, 2025 at 1pm.
