Gregory Allen "Greg" Hunter, Sr.

November 17, 1962 - February 27, 2024

Gregory “Greg” Allen Hunter, Sr., beloved father, husband, brother, grandpa, nephew, and good friend to many, passed away on February 27, 2024, at the young age of 61.

Greg was born in Galveston, Texas on November 17, 1962, to Walter Alexander “W.A.” Hunter, II, and Gay Katherine Warne Hunter. After graduating from Hitchcock High School in 1981, he went on to attend Texas A&M University, as did his father. During his time at A&M, Greg was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets, Squadron 5, also known as the “Filthy Five ‘85” and graduated in 1985.

Greg worked for NRG Energy for over 30 years. He started his career as a meter reader, he worked hard and soon advanced to a plant operator. When he wasn’t working, he was relaxing in his recliner and watching TV, as this was his favorite thing to do, besides spending time with his wife, six children and two bonus children. Greg loved his family more than life itself and would do anything and did everything for them to make them happy.

Greg was reunited with his high-school sweetheart and current wife, Cindy Brooks Hunter and the two were married on July 1, 2004. Together they raised their 8 children.

Greg will always be remembered for his great sense of humor, his selflessness, how he always wanted everyone to be happy, and most of all his love for his family. We couldn’t have asked for a better father, husband, and brother, and we will miss Greg every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew and loved him.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Walter “W.A.” Hunter, II., and Gay Warne Hunter; his brother, Walter “Trey” Hunter, III; grandparents, Walter Hunter, Sr., Nellie Hunter and Katherine Warne.

He is survived by wife, Cindy Hunter; his sister, Heather Hunter and wife, Shirley Hunter, his son, Gregory Hunter, Jr., and wife Krystal Hunter, grandson, Vincent Wong, son, Jordan Hunter and wife, Jackie Hunter, grandchildren, Hunter Willis and Chloe Willis, son, Ryan Hunter, son, Thomas Hunter, daughter, Meghan Hunter, son, Cory Hunter, step-son, Ronnie Sampson, step-daughter, Meagan Sampson, nephew, Kyle Hunter, nieces, Courtney Hunter, Katelyn Hunter, Kelsey Parker and husband, William Parker, aunt, Joyce Warne Fundling and uncle, Jimmy Fundling, cousins, Pamela Stevens, and Jay Fundling.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2024, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pall Bearers: Greg Hunter Jr., Jordan Hunter, Ryan Hunter, Thomas Hunter, Corey Hunter, Ronnie Sampson, Kyle Hunter. Honorary Pall Bearers: Vincent Wong and Hunter Willis.

Visitation will be held from 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday at Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6.

Memorials in the form of donations may be made in Greg’s name to Shriners Children’s Hospital, 815 Market Street, Galveston, Texas 77550.
