Ernest attended Texas A&M University and graduated with an accounting degree in 1957. He was a proud Aggie, and supported the university for several decades, attending home football games for many years.

After A&M, Ernest went to work as a CPA together with his father, Ernest B. Bugh, Sr. '31, in Houston. He proudly served his country, retiring as a Colonel in the US Army and Texas Army National Guard, and was awarded several military decorations including the Legion of Merit.

He enjoyed tending to his garden and greenhouse together with his wife, collecting and growing various plants from their travels, including orchids, plumerias, hibiscus, and poincianas. Ernest especially enjoyed fishing, venturing as far as Alaska for several summers to catch salmon and halibut. He spent most of his life living in the Houston area before moving to Sugar Land in 1997.
