Roll Call Tribute

James Montgomery III '98 April 15, 2024 12:20 PM updated: April 15, 2024 1:24 PM

James Edward Montgomery, III

October 30, 1975 - March 10, 2024

James Edward Montgomery III passed away on March 10, 2024, from a pulmonary embolism.

James was born in Dallas, TX, and spent his childhood in Beaumont before moving to San Antonio. He is a graduate of San Antonio Academy, Alamo Heights High School, and Texas A&M University where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta. James earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Atlantic Veterinary College. He became a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Radiology (ACVR) after completing a residency at North Carolina State University. Before transitioning to private practice, James spent some time in academia as an assistant professor of medical imaging at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, where he met his wife, Jenny. After returning to San Antonio, James found his niche as a teleradiologist. He loved his family more than anything, and working from home allowed him to always be only a few steps away.

As a youth, James was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America. He was an Eagle Scout and went on to be a Ranger at Philmont Scout Ranch. Scouting fostered his passion for exploration, his love of nature, and his true appreciation for the outdoors.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Jenny, and his children Wyatt, Gigi, and Charlotte. He is also survived by his mother Elizabeth (Buffy) Smolens (Peter); father James E. Montgomery, Jr. (Linda); sister Anne Ivy (Mike); uncles Clint Montgomery (Susan) and Preston Shelton; brothers-in-law Dave York (Jan) and Dan York; sister-in-law Sasha York, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. James was predeceased by his grandparents, Vivian and James E. Montgomery, Sr., Dorothy and Horace Shelton, and father and mother-in-law, Terry and Morlene York.

Memorial donations may be made to the San Antonio Food Bank (5200 Historic Old Hwy 90, San Antonio, TX 78227).
