Joe Lewis Poitevent

June 2, 1933 - March 27, 2024

Joe Lewis Poitevent, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, went to be with the Lord on the morning of March 27th. He was at home surrounded by his family.

Joe was born in Houston on June 2, 1933. He met his wife of 69 years, Yvonne, on a blind date arranged by their mothers. A veteran of the Korean War, he proudly served in the U.S Navy as a pilot before graduating from Texas A&M University. Upon graduation he became a successful salesman with IBM before transitioning to vice president of Recognition Equipment. His work took him literally around the world, visiting six continents. In 1982 he returned to his beloved Texas A&M to conclude his career as a professor and student advisor. Upon retirement he was recognized with a freshman "Fish Camp" named in his honor. His favorite question to ask anyone he met was, “Are you an Aggie?”, and if not, “Why?!”.

In 1987 Joe and Yvonne built their dream “log castle” on Lake Palestine. Here they have hosted countless family holidays and celebrations, creating priceless memories for four generations. Soon after retiring, they purchased an RV and traveled much of the U.S. and Canada. Joined by their dear friends of more than 40 years, their best adventure was a trip to Alaska. In retirement, he served as a marshal at Hollytree Country Club for 25 years where he made many friends and organized a Senior Men’s golf program called the Tuesday Tigers. He was so appreciated that they once hosted a "Joe Poitevent Day" at the club.

A man of faith, Joe was a member of Green Acres Baptist Church for 20 years and more recently Flint Baptist. He loved his wife and his family deeply.

He is survived by his wife Yvonne, daughter Carol Masterson (husband Jonathan), sons Rob Poitevent (wife Rhonda), David Poitevent and John Poitevent, grandchildren Megan Pollock, Jason Masterson, Reilly and Riggs Poitevent, and great-grandchildren Kylie, Luna, Elizabeth, Westley and Everett. Greeting him in heaven are his parents George and Mary Jo Poitevent, his brother Donald, his in-laws John and Hazel Guidry, his brother-in-law Rodney and his great-grandson Jake Pollock.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1pm on Saturday, April 13th at Flint Baptist Church - Student Center. We are incredibly grateful for the love and support of the Reach Sunday school class.
