Michael Arthur "Mike" O'Brien

September 28, 1984 - March 11, 2024

Michael Arthur O’Brien, 39, passed away peacefully after a short battle with AML Leukemia on Monday, March 11, 2024 in Houston, Texas. Michael was always the family’s energizer bunny, born 3 weeks early on September 28, 1984 to Patricia and Marty O’Brien in Houston, Texas. He loved to roller blade and swim on the neighborhood swim team as a child. He also played baseball, first as a pitcher and then catcher keeping track of everyone on the team.

Mike attended Yeager Elementary, Bleyl Middle School, and Cypress Creek High School. He attended Blinn Junior College at A&M for two years before transferring to the Mays Business School at Texas A&M as a Junior, where he graduated with a finance degree in 2007. After college, Mike’s family talked him into joining their business, Southland Hardware in Montrose, where he worked as a manager for 17 years.

The luckiest day of his life was when he met Erin, his wife, and the smartest day of his life was when he asked her to marry him. They were married on December 15, 2018 in a lovely ceremony in New Orleans, Louisiana, followed by a second line parade in the French Quarter where everyone danced down Bourbon Street as Mike, Erin and the Kinfolk Brass Band led the parade.

Mike’s struggle with Leukemia lasted for 6 months, first at Memorial Hermann and then at MD Anderson. During that time, he turned 39, celebrated his 5th wedding anniversary, and was present for the birth of his first child, a daughter, Maeve Anna, on December 3rd, 2023.

Mike is survived by his parents Patricia and Marty, sisters Kathleen (Mike) Maddux and Jennifer O’Brien; wife Erin, daughter Maeve, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins, who have all been blessed to have Michael in their lives.

A funeral service is planned for Friday, March 22 at 11 am at the Woodlawn Funeral Home, with a reception to follow.
