Steven Charles Schkade 

September 5, 1952 - February 28, 2024 

Steven Charles "Steve" Schkade of Austin, Texas passed away at home on February 28, 2024 surrounded by the love of family and friends. Age 71, Steve, known by the nickname “Skade,” was born September 5, 1952 and was raised in Giddings, Texas.

Steve graduated from Texas A&M University in 1974. He proudly served as Commanding Officer of Squadron 15 of the Corps of Cadets. A loyal member of the A&M 12th Man, Steve’s love of college football was lifelong. He had a 25-year career at Texas Rehabilitation Commission and enjoyed delving into real estate in retirement.

Steve and his wife Valerie shared a great love for travel, exploring new places and cultures. Steve expressed love through cooking and grilling for family, friends and folks who would become friends over a shared meal! He held a passion for his family’s ranch in Giddings and, with twice-weekly trips to help his mom after his father passed away, it’s for certain that his pickup knew the way.

Steve is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Valerie Taylor Schkade; his son Shawn Christopher Schkade of Cedar Park, Texas and wife Alison Kay Schkade; beloved grandchildren Ella, Ethan and Emerson; sister Barbara Schkade Gomez and husband Sabino Gomez; and extended family. Steve is predeceased by his parents Clarence August Schkade and Ellie Batla Schkade.

A celebration of Steve’s life will be held Sunday, March 17 from 2 - 5 p.m. at River Place Country Club, 4207 River Place Blvd., Austin, Texas 78730. To honor Steve’s love of college football, please wear a shirt for your favorite college football team.
