Carlton Frank Hazlewood, Sr. 

July 25, 1935 - September 7, 2023 

Carlton Frank Hazlewood, Sr., PhD. of The Woodlands, Texas, passed away September 7th, 2023 at the age of 88. Carlton was born July 25, 1935 in Perrin, Texas to Columbus Franklin Hazlewood and Audeen (Mask) Hazlewood.

Carlton graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur Texas in 1953. He attended Texas A&M College and received his BS in Zoology in 1957. Carlton then continued his education at The University of Tennessee Medical School where he earned his PhD in Physiology. He then moved on to Johns Hopkins University and completed his Post-Doctoral Studies in Muscle Physiology. After finishing his post-doctoral work at Hopkins, he was offered a position at Baylor College of Medicine which he accepted. At Baylor, he received the honor of becoming full professor at age 40. He also served as adjunct professor at Rice University in the Department of Physics. He received several other Honorary Degrees from various universities around the world.

Previously, while still at Texas A&M, one of his classmates, John Robert Pike '57, introduced Carlton to his cousin, Geraldine Baker in the summer of 1956. They were married later that year on December 29, 1956 in Port Arthur. They had three children, Carlton Frank Hazlewood, Jr. ‘79, Karen Denise (Hazlewood) Cunningham '81 (Kay) and Terri Lynn (Hazlewood) Woolard.

Carlton went on to become a world renown scientist and was instrumental in some of the basic research on the fourth state of water in the living cell that led to the development of the MRI machines used today. A proud native Texan, he traveled the world in his collaboration and research with other scientists but was always happy to return to the great State of Texas, which he loved, second only to his family.

Carlton is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Geraldine and his brother Ronny Hazlewood. He leaves behind his three children and their spouses C.F. Hazlewood, Jr. ‘79 (Kathy), Karen Cunningham '81 (David '79) and Terri Woolard (Jim). Eight grandchildren, Carl Hazlewood (Emily), Lindsay Salyer (Caleb), Brandon Woolard (Tiffany), Hailey Anver (Dean), Sean Woolard, Holly Cunningham, Sarah Raney (Cordy), Daniel Hazlewood (Honey). Fifteen great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law Penny Hazlewood, two nieces Tracy Rand (Shane) and Tara Rowan (Mike), and two great nephews, Evan and Ayden Rand.
