Roll Call Tribute

Steven "Steve" DeGroot '80 October 13, 2023 12:48 PM updated: October 13, 2023 12:58 PM

Steven William "Steve" DeGroot
December 1, 1951 ~ September 27, 2023

Steve was born December 1, 1951, in Appleton, WI to Maurice and Mary DeGroot. The family moved to Austin, TX in 1962. He graduated from Westlake High School in 1970, the first senior class of Westlake High School.

He then graduated from Texas A&M University in 1980 and had a successful 43 years as a landscape architect. Many of those years he worked with Planned Environments in Austin, Texas before moving into a private practice.

Steven William DeGroot was one of those humans that always brought a smile to your face. He was proud, rebellious, a caretaker, a hard worker, and a forgiver. However, he was also realistic. He wanted you to be yourself and never feel guilty about that. He wants us all to be strong and persevere. That also comes with skepticism, judgment, doubt, and regret. But it also gives us strength, understanding, and knowledge. We may not always understand everything that existence wants to throw at us. However, Steve took every challenge like a champion. He is/was headstrong, loyal, and loved all his family, friends, and colleagues despite our mishaps. You could always count on Steve.

Steve was known always adamant about supporting his children and being present in their activities including (but not limited to) soccer, baseball, football, basketball, choir, band, and cheerleading. Steve is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cheryl; children Gabe, Clayton (Karol), Jacob (Andreah), and Amy. Grandchildren Kevin, Dana. Gabrielle, Claudia, Kiersten, Abigale, and Elissa. Siblings Bud (Lynn), Bob (Kem), Jim (Donna), Tom (Pennie), Don (Barbara), and Mary Kay (Chuck). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as his brother-in-law Dean Kenady.

Many thanks to everyone for your prayers for the past few months and thank you to our family and friends who provided much needed support. Special recognition to Bluebonnet Palliative Care, especially Tarin McMillan, Sonya Silva, and Susie Valadez for their many hours of care and effort.

Memorial Service will be held October 21, 2023 at 1 pm Dripping Springs Presbyterian Church located at 26650 RR 12 Dripping Springs, TX 78620.
