Allen C. Johnson passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on December 16, 2022. after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Jasper, TX to the late Allen E. and Lessie Johnson in 1939. Allen’s early childhood was spent moving around Central and East Texas for his dad’s job before settling in Silsbee, TX. Allen’s first introduction to civil engineering was when he worked for his father’s business – East Texas Transit Mix - which provided road construction materials for southeast Texas.

A curious and witty child, Allen was elected class president and was recognized as valedictorian of Silsbee High School Class of 1957. Allen followed in his father’s footsteps and proudly attended Texas A&M University. He was a member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. Upon graduating Texas A&M in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Allen went on to become a Commissioned officer in the United States Air Force and was stationed in San Antonio.

Following four years of service, Allen graduated from Georgia Tech in 1967 with a master’s degree in civil engineering. Allen remained in the Air Force reserves until 1971 when he was honorably discharged.

Allen met Joan Carroll when they were both living in the same apartment complex in Houston, TX. When he saw Joan, he was immediately smitten. Joan found Allen to be quite serious-minded and career focused. Allen found her to be quite beautiful and funny. They married that same year on November 2, 1967.

For a few years, they had an opportunity to follow Allen’s career and live overseas as ex-pats in Sunberry, England. Upon their return from England, they purchased a home in 1975 where they raised their five children.

Allen’s engineering career spanned over 40 years, with most of it spent at Brown & Root. He focused his attention on the engineering design of naval ports & terminals. Allen also helped with his dad’s company as acting Treasurer until 1981.

Allen was an avid outdoorsman. He was passionate about hunting, fishing, and watching Aggie football. Allen was well known for his love of history and his kids could often find him reading in his favorite chair and studying an atlas.
