Services for Lt. Col. Charles W. Leavitt Jr., a decorated war hero and a former Metro-Dade building and zoning department worker, will be at 8 p.m. today at Boyd's Hollywood Boulevard Funeral Home.
Col. Leavitt, a native of Fort Smith, Ark., died Tuesday at his Hollywood home. He was 69.
A veteran of 50 combat missions as a bombardier while serving with the U.S. Army, Col. Leavitt held the Distinguished Flying Cross with one cluster, the Air Medal with eight clusters and the U.S. Army Air Corps Commendation Medal.
He served in Korea, Vietnam, Africa, Italy, England and Japan during a 25 year military career.
During the latter portion of his career, he served with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations as a special agent, then at various times as a detachment commander, division chief and district commander.
After leaving the military, Col. Leavitt worked as a contract supervisor with the Metro Building and Zoning Division. He retired two years ago.
Survivors include a daughter, Beth Ashley Young of Marietta, Ga., and three grandsons.
