Roll Call Tribute

Mark Barhorst '88 May 6, 2022 12:45 PM updated: May 6, 2022 12:50 PM

Mark Donald Barhorst, M.D.
October 18, 1958 - May 3, 2022

Dr. Mark Donald Barhorst, 63, was peacefully called to his forever home in Heaven on May 3, 2022. He anticipated the day he would see the Glory of God and join his Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ.

He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 18, 1958 to Donald Charles and Anna Marie Barhorst. After moving to Houston in 1972, Mark proudly attended Texas A&M University where he met and quickly fell in love with his wife, Rhonda England Barhorst. They married on July 3, 1980.

Mark graduated from Texas A&M College of Medicine in 1988 and completed his anesthesiology residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota in 1992. He later felt called to pursue additional training in pain management; thereafter, he enjoyed faithfully and compassionately serving thousands of patients in the Northwest Houston area for 25 years. He discovered great purpose ministering to both the physical and spiritual needs of his patients.

Mark had a strong, natural intellectual curiosity. His passion for learning helped him develop a wide range of interests and skill sets that he loved to share with his family and friends. Some of his favorite interests included home remodeling, camping, hunting, automobile mechanics, war history, fire arms, politics and so much more. A dear friend and long-time patient perhaps best described Mark as “a true polymath.”

Mark was a devoted Texas Aggie. He never lost sight of the opportunities that Texas A&M offered him: to further his education, refine his talents, and ultimately discover the calling the Lord had on his life. He loved watching Aggie sports teams and kept up with research and academic achievements within the university. He served as President of the Texas A&M College of Medicine Alumni Association, and he was the recipient of the 2014 College of Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award. Perhaps his most proud Aggie moments were watching his wife and children graduate from Texas A&M. Simply put: Mark bled maroon.

Mark is survived by his loving wife, Rhonda England Barhorst; his children, Clayton Mark Barhorst and wife Amber, and Janna Barhorst Deal and husband Jordan; grandchildren, Jay Barhorst, Drew Deal, Jeff Barhorst, Annie Deal and Sadie Barhorst; siblings, Eileen Neucere and husband Evans, Donna Barhorst and husband King Hom, Alan Barhorst and wife Dina, Annette Stanislav and husband Mark, and Warren Barhorst and wife Lisa; and many nieces, nephews, dear friends and loved ones.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Anna Barhorst.

A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Friday, May 6, 2022 at Klein Funeral Home, 16131 Champion Forest Drive, Spring, TX, 77379.

A funeral service for Mark will be held at 11am on Saturday, May 7, 2022 in The Chapel at the Lanier Theological Library, 14130 Hargrave Road, Houston, TX 77070, to be followed by a 2pm burial service at Aggie Field of Honor & Memorial Cemetery in College Station, TX.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Texas A&M University College of Medicine or the charity of your choice.
