Albert Maverick McNeel, Jr.
August 30, 1928 - March 31, 2022

Honorable, principled generous, and kind are all words that would describe Albert Maverick McNeel, Jr.

Albert was in every sense of the word a true gentleman. Albert never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him.

Born August 30, 1928, at the P&S Hospital on Romana Plaza in San Antonio, Texas. Died March 31, 2022 in San Antonio, Texas. He was predeceased by his great-grandparents Rebecca and Nathan Sodekson who came from Pren, on the Riven Neman in Russia, Jane Maury Maverick and Albert Maverick; his grandparents, Sara and Edward Wallace McCamish and Jesse Maverick and James Shelby McNeel; and his parents: Frances McCamish McNeel, and Albert Maverick McNeel, all of whom are buried in San Antonio, and his beloved son Ian Abbey McNeel, his first wife, June Abbey McNeel, his second wife, Ilsa Frost Garrett McNeel, his sister Sara Noble step-daughters Kathleen Garrett Prosk and Ilsa Garrett, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his loving wife Sally Cook Hoffman McNeel, his daughter Shelby Maverick McNeel Miller, his granddaughters Eliot Waggoner, Hailey Miller and Jordan Miller, and daughter-in-law, Kay Sterner McNeel Barclay, husband Anderson Barclay, and grandchildren Connor Maverick McNeel and Courtney McNeel Kuehl, and great-grandchildren, Tripp Maverick Kuehl, Emma, Kate Kuehl, Liam Maverick Waggoner and Theodore Maverick Granville, brother, James Edward McNeel and his wife, Ann, brother-in-law Charles Henry Noble, many nephews and nieces, many loving stepchildren and step-grandchildren, and his “perfect dog” Bella.

Albert attended the first grade in New Braunfels, then went to school in Three Rivers, Bandera, Muleshoe, Lubbuck, before attending San Antonio’s McKinley and Woodlawn Elementary Schools, Horace Mann Junior School, and Thomas Jefferson High, graduating as president of his senior class in 1945. He attended Texas A&M University, graduating in 1948 and the University of Texas Law School where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and the Phi Alpha Delta honorary law fraternity, graduating in 1951. He was a member of Boy Scout Troup 50 at the Woodlawn Methodist Church becoming an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow. As an adult, he was active in the Scouts’ Alamo Area Council and Troop 88 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where his son, Ian, also became an Eagle Scout. As a Scout he attended camp at Ingram, Texas, and as an adult, he assisted Troop 88 at Scout camp for three years going to Philmont Scout Ranch at Cimmaron, New Mexico in 1974, with a group sponsored by Troop 88.

After passing the Texas State Bar in 1951, Albert worked as an insurance adjuster for the Lloyd Caldwell Insurance Adjustment Service until 1952, when he began the practice of law in the Frost National Bank Building. In his law practice, he was associated with Jack Daniels, Leo Oliver, Jimmy Kennedy, Niles Chubb, Marion A. Olsen, Lukin Gilliland, Roy Garwood, Jr., and William R. Davis. He Practiced law with his cousin, John N. McCamish, Martin, Brown, Ingram Law Firm for two years, with Niles Chubb with Marion Olson for seven years, and with Lukin Gilliland for 46 years. He was active in the San Antonio Bar Association acting as editor of the Subpona newsletter for two years and served as vice-president. He was a member of the Texas State Bar Association, serving on the local State Bar Grievance Committee for six years, three years as chairman. He was also a member of the American Bar Association. He was admitted to practice in the State Courts of Texas, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He practiced law in San Antonio for 60 years, retiring in 2012.

Albert was a member of Christ Episcopal Church from 1938 until his death. He was active at Christ Church teaching Sunday School for 5 years, serving as president of the Men of Christ Episcopal Church for one year and serving on the Vestry twice. He married each of his wives at Christ Episcopal Church.

Albert served as Corporation Court Judge for the City of Alamo Heights for Five years, on the Alamo Heights City Council for six years, and on the Alamo Heights Board of Adjustment for thirty-three years, making a total of 44 years of service to the City of Alamo Heights.

In 1945 when Albert was 16, he suffered an attack of bacterial meningitis which destroyed his thumb muscles and other muscles which caused him to be unacceptable for military service. For this reason, he did not serve in World War II or any other war.

Albert was a member of the San Antonio Country Club, The Order of the Alamo, and the San Antonio German Club. During his lifetime, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, attending sports events, especially University of Texas football games, reading, mostly history, and traveling in the United States and in Europe.

His long life was a great pleasure because of his large family including in-laws, and many friends. In his last 13 years his wonderful wife, Sally, his children, grandchildren, and stepchildren, Sally’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren made those years especially full and happy.

Albert McNeel’s funeral services will be at Christ Episcopal Church, April 12, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow, in the parish hall.
