John Houser Evans
November 14, 1921 - January 4, 2022

John Houser Evans, went to his eternal home with the Lord on January 4, 2022. He was 100 years old.

John was born on November 14, 1921 in Wynona, Oklahoma to John Empson and Florence Estelle Evans.

He is survived by his daughter Debbie Evans Ernst (David) of Lubbock, his son John Wendell Evans of Amarillo, his grandson Chris Ernst '02 (Lori '03) of Double Oak, TX and three great grandsons, Caleb, Hudson, and Josiah Ernst.

John moved to Borger, Texas in 1926, attended Phillips High School for three years and then graduated from Borger High School in 1939. After high school, he attended Texas A&M University and was a graduate of the FIGHTI'N TEXAS AGGIE CLASS of '44. Whoop!! His college years were interrupted by World War II where he served in Europe, mostly throughout France, as a member of the Army Signal Corp in 1944, 1945, and 1946. After the war, he returned to A&M and received his BS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1947. He went to work for Southwestern Public Service (SPS) in 1947 and helped to start their first power plant, Plant X, near Sudan, then moved to the Amarillo office. He also helped start up Jones Station in Lubbock as well.

He married the love of his life, Carolyn Jane Bender in 1947. They were members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Amarillo for many years. John was a registered engineer in Texas and a member of TSPE. He retired from SPS in 1986 as the Head of Systems Operations in Amarillo. John moved to Lubbock in 1999 after losing his wife, to spend the rest of his years with his daughter and family. He became a member of Lakeridge United Methodist Church in Lubbock. He also dearly loved becoming a volunteer for Lubbock Meals on Wheels, and was a volunteer for many years.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Carolyn Jane and his brother Robert F. Evans.

Graveside Service will be at Llano Cemetery in Amarillo at 1:00pm on January 10, 2022.
