Charles Lynn Dodd
September 26, 1942 - September 20, 2021

Charles Lynn Dodd, 78, of Hempstead, Texas, passed away on Monday, September 20, 2021, just days shy of his 79th birthday.  Visitation will be held at McWilliams Funeral Home on Saturday, October 2, 2021 from 10:00- 11:00 a.m. with Memorial Service starting at 11:00 a.m. 

Charles, also known as “Charlie”, was born on September 26, 1942 in Baytown, TX.  He was the son of Shirley Gray Dodd and Jimmie Charles “J.C.” Dodd.  Charles spent much of his childhood in Baytown, TX. At the age of 12 he was considered a miracle survivor, beating all odds of melanoma cancer. At a young age, his life consisted of school, baseball and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

He graduated from Brazosport High School, where he was a star member of the baseball team. With his impressive baseball career he was looked at by the San Francisco Giants. But his dream of becoming a Aggie outweighed his love for baseball. College Station Texas is where he knew he belonged. After graduation, Charles attended Texas A&M, where he was a proud member of the Aggie Corps. Two of his most prized possessions were his Aggie ring and his Senior Boots. It has been rumored, never confirmed nor denied involvement with “borrowing” Bevo. He graduated from A&M in 1967 with a degree in Marketing. 

Even though he left College Station, his heart never left his beloved Aggies. Charles pursued a career in sales.  His charming personality made it easy for him to build relationships and experience success in every job he held.  Charles moved to Albuquerque, NM in the mid-1970s.  He loved the cool weather and dry climate, and spent much of his time in the Sandia Mountains.  In 1989, he moved back to Texas to be close to family. In 1991, Charles discovered that he once again had melanoma cancer. Radiation treatments to destroy the cancer left him with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and a life of doctor’s appointments and medications.  He became an advocate for Cancer screenings and Cancer prevention, and was chosen to speak at a Cancer Survivor’s Event, as one of the longest living survivors from MD Anderson. 

Charles was an avid armchair politician and football coach.  He spent many hours watching conservative news shows and watching sporting events on TV.  He lived for “red” political victories, and would complain vocally to anyone who would listen when they were “blue”!   He loved watching all sporting events, but his favorite sport was college football, especially when his Aggies were playing!  He followed the team closely, and loved to discuss their successes and his strategies to make them better!

His pride and joy was his grandchildren.  Nothing brought him more joy than holding them in his lap, reading books and playing games with them!  He loved to show off their pictures and brag about their accomplishments! He always welcomed his grandchildren with the biggest hugs and a smile.

Charles is preceded in death by his mother, Shirley, and father, J.C, brother, Tom Dodd, and wife of 45 years, Sandra Lloyd Dodd. 

He is survived by his daughters, Traci Chandler of Hempstead, Susanne Wagner of Coldspring, Cara Boggs of Pasadena. Grandchildren Kaleigh Chandler and fiancé Bryce Redden and Madison Chandler. Meagan Hufines and husband Joe, Chad Wagner, David Weiser, Maryellen Weiser, Hanna Weiser, Emma Weiser, Great-grandchildren Mason and Tucker Hufhines, Easton and Weston Wagner, and Kayce Redden.
