Glenn Ray Kunze
November 24, 1952 - September 3, 2021
Glenn Ray Kunze, 68, of Austin, Texas passed away on Friday, September 3, 2021.
Glenn was born in San Benito, Texas on November 24, 1952, the son of Dr. Otto Robert Kunze, Ph.D. and Alice Ruth (Eifert) Kunze. He was baptized into the Christian faith on December 14, 1952, at St. John Lutheran Church in San Benito. He confessed his faith at his confirmation at Bethel Lutheran Church in Bryan, Texas. He was a faithful member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austin for 40 years.
He graduated from A&M Consolidated High School in 1971. He proceeded to Texas A&M University. His sophomore year he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was one of the last individuals to be drafted. He served in the Occupational Army and was stationed near Neubrücke, Germany. After being discharged, he returned to Texas A&M and earned a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He was in the Class of 1975.
Glenn was employed as a Civil Engineer for over 30 years. His entire career was at Turner Collie & Braden / AECOM. He started out in Houston and later transferred to Austin. He acquired and maintained his Professional Engineering license throughout his career. Early in his career his main focus was highway and bridge design and construction. While working he attained numerous positions including Principal Engineer, Technical Director, Project Assistant Vice President, and Design Quality Manager. He was involved in many major highway projects across the state of Texas.
He enjoyed traveling the U.S. as well as other countries including church mission trips. He was an avid Texas A&M sports fan and attended Aggie football games regularly. He enjoyed reading a good long book. Other interests included gardening, running, snow skiing, music, fishing and hunting. He followed in his father’s footsteps in improving the land and raising cattle at their family farm in Warda, Texas.
He is survived by two brothers: Allen Kunze of College Station, TX; and Charles Kunze of Grand Prairie, TX; and one sister, Karen Gerdes and husband, Mark, of Hutto, TX; two aunts and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Otto Kunze, Ph.D. and Alice Kunze.
First visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations. A second visitation will be held prior to the funeral service on Thursday, September 9, 2021 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Warda, Texas. The family will be present to receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The funeral service will follow beginning at 10:30 a.m. with burial at the Old Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1500 W. Anderson Lane, Austin, TX 78757 or to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, P. O. Box 69, Warda, TX 78960.
