Michael Leroy Maciel
November 7, 1960 - June 2, 2021

“He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much."
— Bessie A. Stanley.

Peacefully and surrounded by his loving family, Michael Leroy Maciel passed from this life on June 2, 2021 at the age of 60.

Michael was born to Jose and Vicenta Maciel in Quay, New Mexico on November 7, 1960. He grew up with a love of reading, adventure, family and had a natural tenacity for seeking out the good things in life.

Growing up in El Paso, TX, Michael graduated from Eastwood High School and continued his education at Texas A&M University. After living in different parts of the US, Michael settled in the College Station/Bryan, Texas community.
After graduating in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in architecture, Michael pursued his master’s degree and became a longtime employee of the Texas A&M library system for 25 years.

Michael was a proud son, uncle, brother, brother-in-law, friend and A&M alum. He was an avid reader and lover of literature, European football, tennis, shopping, travel and a good debate. Michael had a big laugh, gave the biggest hugs and was a generous man with a caring heart. He loved his family fiercely and deeply. And as many know, he was always ready with a heart-felt funny family story to tell to any willing listener.

Michael is greeted in death by his loving sister and brother-in-law Norberto and Stella Aragon, brother Manuel Maciel, mother and father Vicenta and Jose Maciel, and many wonderful friends and prolific aunts, uncles, and grandparents of the Maciel and Moncada families.

Michael is survived by his nieces Patricia Carpenter of Las Cruces, NM, wife of Robert Carpenter and Elizabeth Kotiaho of Evergreen, CO, wife of Markku Kotiaho, sister Lilli Maciel of Douglas, AK, great-nieces and nephews Kristin Carpenter of Garland, TX, mother of Walker Borgeson, Victoria Carpenter of El Paso, TX, mother of Flynn Carpenter-Brecheisen, wife of Zachary Brecheisen, Julianna Kotiaho, Ethan Kotiaho, Gabrielle Kotiaho and Emma Kotiaho of Evergreen, CO. Michael is also survived by numerous dear friends and “fur baby” nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will take place on June 24 from 1-3 pm in the A&M Sterling C. Evans library, 2nd floor room 202A. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal shelter in memory of Michael L. Maciel.
