Charles Lewis Mueldener
November 18, 1935 - December 12, 2016
Charles was born November 18, 1935, the son of Helen and William Adolf Mueldener in Lyons, Kansas. Charles attended Lyons High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Fort Hays State College and his master’s degree from Texas A&M. Upon graduation he began his career in education, teaching in Kansas and Colorado.
Charles was an educator to the bone. While this is virtually always a noble trait, his son Bill remembers a frustrating night when his dad explained to him how an elementary level math problem was a building block for some calculus equation in which he suffered through a fifteen minute discussion on the specifics of calculus.
However, we are also reminded of the story a friend of Bill’s shared years after high school about being laid up in the hospital for back surgery which keep him out of school for an extended period, and how “Mr. Mueldener” would come to his hospital room to walk him through the day’s or week’s lessons in order to ensure that he would not fall behind. The story epitomizes our dad’s character; Charles, or Chuck as his friends would call him, loved to take care of his family, friends, and students.
In addition to teaching, Charles was involved in numerous extracurricular activities including coaching football, gymnastics and swimming.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife Allene, with whom he travelled the world and spent 5 years in Germany teaching, after retiring from Jefferson County Public Schools. He leaves behind three sons (Ken, Kirk and Bill), their spouses (Deb, Melissa, and Kelly) and one daughter, Cindy and her husband Ty; as well as, two sisters (Gretchen and Joan) and his brother, Karl and wife Sharlene. He also has eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom he loved deeply.
He loved to watch the Rockies and Broncos and especially loved watching his kids and grandkids participate in all sporting events. He was lovingly referred to as “Papa” by his family. Papa, we all wish for another fifteen minutes to listen to any lesson you would have to share.
Charles passed away on December 12, 2016. His memorial service will be held at 1pm, January 8, 2016 at: Aspen Mortuaries, 6370 Union St., Arvada, CO 80004. The memorial will be followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation, The Colorado Symphony, The National Parks Foundation or to the Bernese Mountain Dog Rescue.
