Dr. Donald Lee Elfert
August 2, 1933 - April 11, 2021
Dr. Donald Lee Elfert of Lake Charles passed away Sunday, April 11 in Alexandria, LA at the age of 87. Born August 2, 1933 in Cheneyville, LA, he is survived by his wife of 63 years Alice Hathorn Elfert, daughter Debbie Dupin, granddaughter Michelle Dupin, great grandsons Henry, Scott and Reed and sister Marilyn Qualls. Don is preceded in death by his parents Ora Lee and Thomas Clarence Elfert, sister Lois Thompson, sister Shirley Neal Baily and brother Thomas Clarence Elfert Jr.
Don graduated from Cheneyville High School in 1951, received his bachelor and master's degree in Industrial Arts and Math Education from Northwestern State College and was awarded an EdD degree from Texas A&M University. He did Infantry Basic Training and Combat Engineers Basic Training at Fort Carson, Colorado. He participated in Operation Sagebrush, the largest peace time maneuver ever held to that date, where he drove a 2½ ton truck in convoy from Fort Benning to Louisiana.
Don was an Instructor in Engineering Graphics at the Missouri School of Mines & Metallurgy and an Instructor in Engineering Graphics and Shop at McNeese State University teaching courses in Engineering Graphics, Introduction to Engineering Computations, Agricultural Engineering and Manufacturing Processes. He retired from MSU with 38 years of service in 1997.
Don was an MSU Campus Representative for the Gulf-Southwest Section of the American Society for Engineering Education, served on the Lake Charles Clean City Board/Team Green for more than 20 years and with United Way for 9 years. Don loved landscape photography and enjoyed gardening and woodworking. Don was an usher and money counter at St. Margaret Catholic Church.
A Graveside Service will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park, Pineville, LA on Thursday, April 15 at 11am.
The family would like to thank the nurses, therapists and staff at Regency House and Kindred Healthcare for their exceptional care and compassion.
