Cheryl Ann Henry
NOVEMBER 19, 1946 – APRIL 5, 2021
Retired educator and cherished sister, Cheryl Henry, passed away on April 5. Cheryl Ann was born November 19, 1946 in Austin, TX to Rex and Irene (Olson) Medcalf. Our Dad later graduated from the University of Oklahoma, re-entered the military and as a result Cheryl went to schools in at least 7 states and Germany, graduating from Wurzburg American HS. As a young woman, Cheryl was a cheerleader and tennis player. During her twenties and thirties, she worked in numerous administrative roles, supporting her husband during his military service and college years, and later as a coach’s wife. During this time they raised Border Collies for sheep dog trials, and she developed a love for the breed. She continued her college studies through numerous moves, and graduated from Texas A&M University. She taught junior high and high school math, with her last school being the Del Valle Opportunity Center. She loved equipping students, and made many friendships among teachers and staff at Del Valle. She traveled, played bridge and attended many pot luck dinners with this group. After retiring as an educator, Cheryl worked for a family owned business and kept company with her parents as they aged, traveling with them to family reunions in both Texas and Minnesota, watching football and golf with Dad, playing cards and assisting with Mom’s care. The reunions led to better knowing cousins, of whom there are 16 still living on Mom’s side and 2 on Dad’s side of the family. She played Bunco and enjoyed dining out with her church women’s group, and spending time with her sister, Greta.
Cheryl enjoyed watching college football, especially her Aggies. She also loved cats, her yard, growing plants, shopping, playing cards and logic games. As her health declined in recent years, she remained strongly independent, living at home and driving to dialysis until complications from a fall contributed to her death.
She was predeceased by her parents and brother-in-law Joseph Rymal. Cheryl is survived by her sister, Greta Rymal; aunt, Sylva Whitehead; numerous cousins and Miss Tuxedo.
The family thanks neighbors who befriended her, caregivers in nursing, hospital and dialysis settings and her church family, Abiding Love Lutheran Church for its years of support and kindness.
Cheryl had a soft spot for the food ministries of Abiding Love and care for animals, such as Austin Pet’s Alive and Thundering Paws for those who might wish to consider memorials and in lieu of flowers.
A Memorial service for the family will be held at Abiding Love Lutheran Church in Austin, and her remains will be interred this summer at Geneva Cemetery, near family farms in Minnesota.
