Thomas Earl Winters
May 17, 1934 - April 16, 2006
Thomas Earl Winters passed away at his ranch in Mills County on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006. He was one month shy of his 72nd birthday.
Thomas Earl was born on a ranch near Evant, Texas, on May 17, 1934, to Thomas William and Edna Earl Winters. He was schooled in Evant and went on to attend Texas AandM University, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets.
He spent many years working alongside his father and brother in all phases of the livestock industry. Together they owned and operated the Lampasas Livestock Auction in addition to many other auctions throughout Central Texas. The trio also raised and traded cattle, sheep and goats throughout Texas, the Southwest and the Midwest, and operated ranches in Texas, New Mexico, Kansas and Colorado.
In 1955, he married Wynona Joan Barnett, and together they forged a life and a family. In 1959, they purchased the C Bar Ranch in Mills County, where they have made their home and livelihood to this very day. In December, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
During the 1970s, in addition to his ranching interests, Thomas Earl, along with his brother-in-law, Billy Bob Barnett, owned and operated the Miller Beer Distributorship in Fort Worth and Dallas, Texas. Later, in the early 1990s, he played a major role in building and operating Valley Greyhound Track in Harlingen, Texas.
He has also been involved in various bingo halls throughout the state as well as pawnshops in Central Texas, along with a wide variety of other business ventures. Throughout his life, Thomas Earl created a wide circle of friends and business partners. He was quick to take in anyone who would work hard, and he was known for an entourage of interesting characters. All who knew him found him to be smart, honest and colorful.
Thomas Earl is survived by his devoted wife, Wynona; his two daughters, Molly Earl Winters and Maggy Katherine Jones; his grandchildren, Thomas Marshall Winters, Thomas Randolph Jones, Marla Katherine Jones and Nicholas Alexander Jones; one great-grandchild, Mia LaFrae Winters; his brother, David William Winters; two nephews, Thomas David Winters and John Carter Winters; one granddaughter-in-law, Cheyenne M'Dee Winters; and one son-in-law, Craig Randolph Jones.
He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Thomas Joe Winters.
