Ann Raquel Nunez
1942 - 2021

Ann Raquel Nunez was born on April 17, 1942. She was one of four children born from the union of S. Roy Nunez originally of Mexico City, Mexico, and later Carleton, Michigan and Lovica Kelley of Carleton, Michigan. Ann would attend and graduate from St. Mary Academy in Monroe as a member of the class of 1960.

Shortly after her college graduation, Ann, would set out on a life of adventure. She joined the Peace Corp serving until 1966. She was assigned to Brazil and worked at 4-H Clubs within the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Ann adapted well to her surroundings where she was loved by the people and became, fluent in Portuguese.

Upon her return to the states, she would make her home in Texas obtaining her Doctor of Philosophy Degree from Texas A&M University in 1977. Ann would spend her working career in the Telecom Industry. She was employed as a Researcher and Technical Writer retiring from Lucent Technologies in 2005.

Ann made her home in various states throughout the course of her life from Michigan to Texas and Ohio to Florida. She also enjoyed extensive traveling including destinations of Africa, Europe, and many family cruises to Caribbean Islands. Ann cherished activities that supported her love of nature and animals. She cared for turtles during their breeding times, participated with friends on bird watching trips, and participated in various fish and water life protection activities. She was an avid contributor to The Nature Conservancy and other charities that supported nature, fish and wildlife.

Ann Raquel Nunez, age 78, of Lake Mary/Deland, Florida passed away on Friday; February 12, 2021. In addition to her parents her passing was preceded by a brother: Richard Nunez; and one sister: Rita Steffes.

To cherish her memory, she leaves a brother: David (Barbara) Nunez of Carleton; seven nieces and nephews: Julianne Nunez Jablonski of Novi, Kathy Nunez Forester of Dearborn, David E Nunez of Carleton, Susan Nunez Gardner of Whitmore Lake, Janis Nunez Sawasky of Charlevoix, Raquel (Kelly) Steffes of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Christopher Nunez of Salem, Oregon; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

A private graveside service will be held at St. Patrick Cemetery in Carleton, Michigan with burial to follow. Merkle Funeral Service, North Monroe; 2442 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan 48162 (734) 384-5185 has been entrusted with Michigan arrangements.
