Roy Anderson Martin
December 13, 1932 - July 31, 2020

Roy Anderson Martin passed away peacefully on July 31, 2020, in his home on Lake Athens, at the age of 87. His last breath on earth, with his wife by his side, was his first breath in Heaven.

He was predeceased by his parents Dougherty Exline Martin and Patti Anderson Martin, brother Exline Martin, sister Joyce Martin Murray and brother-in-law Richard Murray.

Loving survivors include his wife Michele Myers Martin, eldest son David Martin and his wife Penny, son John Martin and wife Lynn, daughter Karin Martin Shinpaugh and husband Carl, son Paul Martin and wife Robin, step-son James Hull and wife Tara, son Jay Martin and wife Tanie, and daughter Katie Martin Jennings and husband Garrett.

His beloved grandchildren are Markie and Margo Martin, Case and wife Elizabeth Martin, Matt and wife Kate Martin, Mandy and husband Austin Major, Austin and Ashley Shinpaugh, Janie and Eric Martin, Ashlynn Hull, Philip and Jason Martin, and Addison and Wayne Jennings. His adorable great grandchildren are Matt and Kate's son Cooper and Case and Elizabeth's daughter Mila.

Roy enjoyed reading his Bible and other historical works. He kept his mind sharp learning a new word every day and working Sudoku puzzles. He loved the backyard action at the lake, and he especially enjoyed taking in the wildlife just outside his window. He and Michele spent hours holding hands while staring at the birds, napping or watching a movie. For both of them, paradise was in the simple things.

Roy grew up in Waxahachie in the Ellis County Courthouse where his dad was County Surveyor. He received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at Texas A&M where Roy was captain of the A&M basketball team. He then got his Masters from UT and taught there for a year. He was invited back to be a professor in engineering but instead served in Military Intelligence in the U.S. Army. He worked his entire career of 50 years with Texas Industries where he was highly regarded, part of the time overseeing Ready Mix, and for 19 years as general manager of Athens Brick.

Roy did some mighty things in his life, but the most important was the love he had for his family. He was fondly known as Big Granddaddy, Miracle Man and his wife's favorite Gentle Giant. To all who knew him, his kindness and thoughtfulness were unparalleled. While he is sorely missed, his family is at peace knowing he is with our Lord.

If you choose to do so, memorials can be made to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 4550 Montgomery Avenue, Suite 1100N, Bethesda, MD 20814, or to the Willed Body Program at UT Southwestern Medical School, 5323 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas, TX 75390.
