October 29, 1938 - March 02, 2021

Donald Allen Hayes (Don), 82 passed away on March 2 at his home is Spring, Texas. Don was preceded in death by his parents Allen and Erna Hayes of LaPorte, Texas.

Don is survived by his wife Charlotte, daughter Stephanie Lynne Nelson '88 (Rod), son Derek Allen Hayes, grandson Logan Tyler Nelson and seven siblings.

Don was born in Houston, Texas, but lived his early years in La Porte, Texas. He graduated with a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M in 1962, He was an “Aggie” through and through and considered his degree one of his greatest achievements.

After graduation Don and Charlotte were married on November 17, 1962. Don went to work for Schlumberger Well Services. Don worked for Schlumberger 36 years and retired in 1998. Eighteen months later, Don opened Hayes Consulting Services and worked with Southwestern Energy for the next eleven years, before his retirement. He was a member of the Society of Well Logging Analysts, the Society of Petroleum Engineers and served multiple terms on the Schlumberger Credit Union Board of Directors.

Don was a gentle soul and caring husband, father and grandfather. Don and Charlotte had many wonderful times together. They loved and enjoyed their children’s antics and watching them grow up to be the wonderful people they are. They survived the heartache of their son Derek’s injury in 1986 through their deep rooted commitment and everlasting love for each other.

Don never complained and was very committed to helping any way he could. He was always on the road, either for work or taking his son Derek to years of therapies, day hab and movies. They had many fantastic adventures together. Don and Derek had a very close and special relationship. They loved each other dearly. Don was a member of Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Church where he and Derek attended Bible Study classes together. Many friends were made there and Don enjoyed being introduced as Derek’s Dad.

Stephanie and Don shared a love of sports watching many games together. When Stephanie graduated from Texas A&M it was a highlight in Don’s life to add another Aggie to his family. Don got to visit Stephanie when she lived in Paris, France. He enjoyed touring Paris, visiting Holland to see all the beautiful tulips in bloom and a trip to Normandy.

Don loved being a grandfather and following all of Logan’s activities over the years. Don delighted in attending Logan’s graduation from the University of Wisconsin in 2018 with his BS in Mechanical Engineering. He was so proud to have another engineer in the family.

Don was very Blessed with a life of Love, Family and Friends.

The Funeral Mass will be held on April 22, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 18511 Klein Church Road, Spring, Texas 77379. Attendants are asked to please wear masks. The Funeral Mass will be streamed live by the church for out of town family and friends who cannot attend. Graveside services will be at Klein Memorial Park, 9714 Farm to Market 2920, Tomball, Texas 77375 immediately following the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
