William George Blair
March 2, 1931 - March 13, 2021
William George “G” Blair, 90, of Carthage, TX, passed away Saturday morning, March 13, 2021, in Carthage. He was born on March 2, 1931, in Carthage to the late Austin Parker and Mary Ruth Chamness Blair. He attended Carthage High School where he ran track, played football, and graduated with the class of 1948. G. attended and played football for Panola College and later at Tulane University. He then transferred to Texas A&M University where he played football for 2 years and was a member of the Letterman’s Assn. While at A&M, he served in the ROTC program and earned a B.S. in Physical Education in 1953.
Mr. Blair served in the U.S. Air Force in the 3201st Air Police Squadron, attaining the rank of 1st Lt. before being honorably discharged. He married Judith Sturgeon on Jan. 1, 1989, in Carthage. He worked for Champlin Petroleum Co. / Union Pacific, retiring after 35 years of service. He later owned and operated B&B Aluminum and Locksmith. In his spare time, he enjoyed quail and deer hunting, fishing, and in his later years, he enjoyed and was an excellent gardener. Mr. Blair was preceded in death by the mother of his child, Berneice Blair.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Judith Sturgeon Blair of Carthage; son, Brad Blair and wife Becky of Carthage; brother, Felton Blair of Dallas; grandchildren, Brooke Blair Cope and Brynne Tate and husband Barry; great-grandchildren, Blair and Bradley Cope; and step-children, John Groom and wife Johnna and Lygia Lovelace and their families.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, at Restland Memorial Park with Bro. Freddy Mason officiating under the direction of Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home prior to the graveside service.
Pallbearers are Benny Mitchell, Ray Tiller, Randy Blair, Paul Blair, Barry Tate, Dennis LaGrone, Pat Browning and John Groom. Honorary pallbearers are Felton Blair and Vince Tate.
