Roll Call Tribute

Curtis Samford '83 February 23, 2021 3:49 PM updated: February 25, 2021 10:15 AM

Curtis Martin Samford
March 13, 1961 - February 14, 2021

On Sunday, February 14, 2021, Curtis Martin Samford met his Savior face to face at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by his loving family.

Curtis was born in Houston, Texas, on March 13, 1961, to Travis ‘Cotton’ and Bonnie Samford. He grew up with his younger brother, Matthew, and younger sister, Angel. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science in Geophysics.

Curtis met the love of his life, Traci Richardson, at church while he was a student at Texas A&M. After two years of dating, they married on June 9, 1984. A closet romantic, Curtis doted on Traci. Even after 39 years together, he told anyone that would listen that he had “the most beautiful wife,” that their boys were lucky “to have such an amazing mother,” and fibbed “that they never once had a single argument.”

One of Curtis’ biggest accomplishments was being a father to his sons, Cody and Ty. As kids, he was their hero and, even as adults, they still see him that way. Through the ups and downs of life, Curtis was always there for them as a role model, mentor, and advice-giver. He encouraged them to be the best version of themselves and always to make time for family.

Curtis had a true Aggie spirit of integrity and commitment. He led by example and helped those in need - never asking for anything in return. He welcomed each new face as his family grew to include “son” Jauron and “daughters” Kaylee and Heather. Curtis was loyal and devoted to his family and friends and was always available to help and support them however he could.

Curtis worked for several companies in the oil and gas industry, including Betz, Shell Oil, Alcoa, PCC, and has been the President and Chief Executive Officer of AFGlobal since 2015. Curtis loved spending his time on the golf course and enjoyed sharing that passion with Traci and his sons. From under the table Monopoly deals to a quick-witted, sarcastic retort, he loved teasing his friends and family. He wrote his own rules, and if you said that he couldn’t do something, he would make sure he did.

His deep faith in Jesus Christ gave Curtis strength, peace, and joy throughout his life. He will forever be missed, but we take great comfort in knowing we will be with him again in heaven one day.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be sent to either The Texas A&M Foundation Traci ’11 and Curtis ’83 Samford Geosciences Career Center or Reach Ministries/Camp 220 to honor Curtis’s memory.
