Curtis Lindon Barnfield
December 14, 1935 - December 22, 2020
Curtis Lindon Barnfield, age 85, passed away on December 22, 2020 at about 4pm in Georgetown, Texas, where he and his wife Kay retired to over 20 years ago on 25 acres outside of town.
Curtis was born on December 14, 1935 to Carl Matthew Barnfield and Katherine Margaret Barnfield (birth name Davis), in Colorado City, Texas. He grew up in Big Spring, Texas, graduated from Big Spring High School in the Class of ’54, and left to serve in the United States Marine Corps from July 1954 through July 1958. When he got back he courted Julia Kay Bonifield, who also grew up in Big Spring, and they were married there on September 7, 1959. Curtis enrolled at Texas A&M University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with a minor in business in 1962. At the time a mathematics degree was the closest thing to a degree in computer programming, and Curtis began a career in that field that lasted 35 years, mostly in Houston, Texas, during which he worked on the programs used on the Apollo lunar module.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Juanita Pearl Currie, Carlene Moore, and Cathryn Margaret Matthews. Curtis is survived by his wife Kay Barnfield and children and grandchildren: son Frederick Lindon Barnfield and his husband Lawrence Rodriguez; son Byron Curtis Barnfield, his wife Alane Marie Barnfield (birth name Kappus) and their sons Braden Barnfield, Kayden Barnfield, and Aiden Barnfield; daughter Julia Katherine Barnfield, her wife De Andra Marie Breeden and their son Oliver Lindon Barnfield; and son Matthew Stuart Barnfield, his wife Kimberly Ann Barnfield (birth name Finley) and their daughters Julia Elizabeth Barnfield and Madeline Susan Barnfield, and Matthew’s son Patrick Nicholas Thomson.
Curtis had a way with people, admired by computer programmers and ranchers alike for his unpretentious honesty, ready smile and quick wit. He enjoyed camping, carpentry, photography and gentleman ranching, and took pride in being a free thinker. But the most important thing to Curtis was family, and most of all his wife, and this showed in everything he did.
The funeral is being held on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 and will be private due to the pandemic. Please send any flowers to the Ramsey Funeral Home, and any donations to Meals on Wheels of Williamson & Burnet Counties (add “”In memory of Curtis Barnfield” in the last field labeled NOTES). A memorial will be held at a later date to be determined once it is safer to travel and congregate.
