January 06, 1935 - November 13, 2020
Donald Lee Groves, age 85, passed away on November 13, 2020. He was born to Roy and Mary (Bowman) Groves on January 6, 1935 in Oklahoma. Donald married the love of his life, Alleene Jones on August 5, 1958 in Houston, Texas and completed a short tour with the Navy the same year. He graduated from Texas A&M, class of 1957, with a degree in Business Administration and moved to South Texas in 1960.
They had 3 children whom they adored. He moved to Austin and started Capitol City Insurance Agency in 1968, serving the central Texas market for over 30 years. His yellow ‘rocket’ car that sat outside the agency’s office on MoPac was a great idea, in a long line of great ideas. After he retired from insurance in 1998, Lake Tahoe, CA became his new arena to work all of his systems at Lakeside Casino, dream up big plans, and complete every project he could imagine. Cane manufacturing will never be the same!
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mary Groves; sister, Geneva Havens.
He is survived by his wife, Alleene Groves; his brother Alvin Groves; son Doug Groves and wife, Patty; daughter, Marilyn and husband, Mark Harren; daughter, LeeAnn Groves; grandson, Dwight Groves and wife, Jaclyn; grandson, Heath Groves; granddaughter, Andrea and husband, Wesley Denton; grandson, Hunter Harren; great- grandsons, Hudson Groves and Brooks Denton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Donald L. Groves '57 Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Business at Texas A&M University. Donations can be sent to the Texas A&M Foundation at 401 George Bush Dr, College Station, TX 77840 and list the Donald L. Groves '57 Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Business in the memo line.
