Fred Lee Herrington
AUGUST 1, 1947 – JULY 3, 2020

Fred Lee “Tuffy” Herrington, age 72, peacefully passed this earthly life to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 3, 2020, while in hospital in the Texas Medical Center. His suffering is no more.

Tuffy was born on August 1, 1947, in Goose Creek, Texas (now known as Baytown). He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1965, took a few classes at Lee College, and then proudly graduated with a degree in Ag Education from Texas A&M University. He was a proud Fighting Texas Aggie Class of ‘70. A horsemen for most of his youth and young adult days, Tuffy was a rodeo cowboy that competed in rodeos as a calf roper and bull dogger, including participating in the Aggie inaugural rodeo club. He went on to enjoy a career of teaching middle and high school science. He began his career as a vocational Ag student teacher in Mart, TX and then 2 years of teaching science in Eagle Pass, TX. He finally retired in 2004 at Barbers Hill ISD after 30 years of teaching science, Project Wild, and leading U.I.L. Science teams. For the creation of elective Project Wild, he was named a top U.S. science teacher. He was beloved by his many science students over the years.

In 1972, at the “Gilley’s” club of Urban Cowboy fame in Pasadena, TX, Tuffy laid eyes on his future bride, Carolyn. The two were married on January 27, 1973 and remained wedded for 47 years until his passing. The couple proudly raised one daughter, his only child Debra. Tuffy enjoyed life to its fullest with his family and friends. He enjoyed horses, camping, fishing, hunting, bird-watching and travel to the majority of U.S. National Parks and Scotland. At the age of 52, he pursued a new passion of golf, which he greatly enjoyed playing with his friends, his son-in-law Darren, and his two grandsons Brock and Brody. Tuffy had grown strong in his Christian faith in the past few years, and was dedicated to privately helping others in their time of need.

Tuffy will be deeply missed by those who survive him. He is survived by his wife Carolyn (née McCann) Herrington; his daughter and son-in-law Debra and Darren Dickson of Barrington Hills, IL; his grandsons Brock Ashton and Brody Frederick; his brother and sister-in-law Benny and Rosemary Herrington; his brother and sister-in-law Mike and LaVon Herrington; his loving nieces and nephews Robin, Joey, Bonnie, Justin, and Randy; and his stepson Keith Askins. He was preceded in death by his parents Elza Bernard and Jewell Marie (née DuBose) Herrington and his beloved nephew Steve Herrington.

A graveside service will be held Saturday July 11, 2020 at 10 a.m. at Cedarcrest Cemetery, 3010 Ferry Rd, Baytown, TX 77520.

In lieu of flowers, check donations may be made to Barbers Hill Homecoming and Scholarship Association “In Memorial of former teacher Fred Herrington” PO Box 904, Mont Belvieu, TX 77580.
