Richard Cappel '56 April 15, 2020 1:59 PM updated: April 17, 2020 9:02 AM

Richard J. Cappel (Lt. Colonel, USAF Ret.) passed away to join our lord on April, 8, 2020. He was born on January 24, 1934, the third of three children. Richard attended St. Mary parochial school in Port Arthur, TX, then high school at Holy Cross in New Orleans. He later attended Texas A&M University, graduating in 1956. On December 26, 1959, he married Mary Shelton of London, England. He began his military service in the US Air Force in October 1956. His military career spanned 28 years as an Air Force pilot. He flew fighters – F84F and F100, bombers – B47, tankers – KC – 135, then reconnaissance aircraft in the RF4C and the RC-135. During Vietnam War, he flew the RF4C, flying 192 combat missions, primarily over North Vietnam and Laos earning 13 Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Richard is a long time member of Knights of Columbus #16730, the Daedalians (a National Fraternity of Military Pilots), and the San Antonio A&M Club. Richard is proceeded in death by his wife, Mary Evelyn Cappel by 3 days.

Mary E. Cappel passed away to join our lord on April 5, 2020. She was born on December 1, 1937, the third of three children. Mary was raised in London, England. On December 26, 1959, she married Richard J. Cappel of Port Arthur, TX. She was an Air Force wife and a homemaker raising five children, Richard Jr, Bruce, Philip, Susan and Julie. Mary loved playing tennis, gardening and crocheting. Mary was survived by her husband, Richard J. Cappel, for only 3 days.

Both Richard and Mary are members of Our Lady of the Atonement Catholic Parish. Richard and Mary were survived by Sons Richard J. Cappel, Jr, Bruce D. Cappel, and Philip E. Cappel, his wife Tracy K. Cappel, Daughters Susan H. Thwing, her husband Clint J. Thwing, and Julie A. O'Coners. Grandchildren: Colten Batey, his wife Melanie Batey, Ross Cappel, Courtney V. Cappel, Philip J. Cappel, Kristin Hicks, Aydin O'Coners and Gage O'Coners. And Great Grandchildren: Kaylee and Brynlee.

Private Burial arrangements will be held at 10:00AM on April 17th, 2020, at St Joseph of Honey creek cemetery.
