Obituary of John Rawley Jr.
John Rawley (Carroll John Rawley Jr.) went home to Jesus on July 16, 2019, at age 75. John was born to Carroll and Margaret Rawley on August 21, 1943 in Evansville, Indiana. As a child he moved to Houston and adventured into the bayou, rafting, and catching snakes. He always enjoyed musical activities. He attended Texas A&M University, receiving a Masters degree in Nuclear Engineering.
John’s career took him to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to work at Bettis Atomic Power Lab designing reactors for the Navy. John met his wife, Bonlee Douthett, in 1968 on a blind date at a charity steeple chase. They married May 3, 1969, and had 2 children, Sharon, and Mark. John went on to work on commercial reactors in Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Dallas.
John met Jesus on a retreat which resulted in a life of Christian service. He applied to Dallas Theological Seminary, and obtained a Masters in Biblical Studies in 1986, with a goal of influencing the scientifically unchurched. He has served as a Bible teacher, and Elder in several local churches and was on the Board of Sojourner Ministries. He sang in the choir and played bass in the ensemble. John held an unwavering faith in God and strived to serve others.
In addition to being a loving dedicated husband, father and grandfather, John was creative in solving problems like designing his home security system and building a personal amplifier with earphones to hear his bass. He always enjoyed the outdoors in sports such as a running (including marathons), snow skiing, sailing, and kayaking. He also liked target shooting with friends.
John is predeceased by his parents and sister, Janice. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bonlee; his sister, Jo Graves and husband Glenn; his two children Sharon Henson and husband Brian and Mark Rawley and wife Tiffany; and his four grandchildren, Noah and Camden Henson and Kylie and Gabriel Rawley.
A Memorial service will be held for John, Sunday July 28th, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Town North Presbyterian Church, 1776 N. Plano Road, Richardson TX.
