Marie Hauff
1942 - 2019
Marie Hauff, age 77, spirited away in the arms of her daughters on Oct. 31, 2019 after an exhausting six months trying to regain her former strength following unexpected medical complications.
Memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Ash Creek Baptist Church Azle, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, we asked that you make a donation in her name to the Azle Lions Club, PO Box 211, Azle, Texas 76020.
Marie was born Jan. 27, 1942 in Andrews, Texas to M.O. and Newell Woolam. She graduated from Andrews High School in 1960. After a whirlwind courtship she was escorted by her mother to Rhode Island to marry our father, James Comer in 1962. Thus beginning the wanderlust that would carry her across the U.S. on many adventures. A bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Texas A&M in 1979 instilled her passion for archaeology and Native American culture. After years of traveling to do the work she loved, she met Jeff Hauff at an archaeology convention. Their shared interest in archaeology and historical preservation lead to marriage in 1983. They resided in Laramie, Wyoming and both worked at the University of Wimberley, Texas in 2000 to be near their first grandchild and welcomed a second one in 2003.
Outside of archaeology, Marie had numerous other passions which included weaving, spinning, and textile work. She was an active member of fiber guilds in Wimberly, Austin, and Fort Worth. She retired in 2008 after employment with the Blanton Museum of Art at the UT Austin campus (yes, you read that correctly, an Aggie worked at UT-Gig’em Aggies!).
With encouragement from her family, she relocated to Azle in 2012. Marie never met a stranger but also enjoyed her alone time watching her favorite crime shows or reading a good mystery novel. She said she was very lucky with the close friendships she created over the years and enjoyed many trips with friends to fiber workshops shops and the Lions Club summer diabetic camp, yoga at the senior center, trips to the local library and Half- Price books, and indulging in Chick-fil-A minis with her “senior” diet Dr. Pepper.”
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, a son and several loyal pets.
She is survived by her daughters Denise Comer and Jamie Westbrook, son-in-law Rusty, grandson Zach, and granddaughter Maddy. First husband James Comer and his wife Marjene Comer. Their children John and wife Nicole, Chelsea and husband Cameron. Their friendship and love for each other demonstrated the true definition of family. And, second husband Jeff Hauff. Plus many amazing nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
