There are men and there are great men. Monday, October 14th, we lost one of the greatest. Roy “Tate” Gunn age 90, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, after a long arduous battle with MDS. This left us the daunting task of writing his obituary. There are no words that can come close to describing such an incredible Man and do justice to his life and presence on this earth. He was an inspiration and a role model of what a man should be to many. He lived life to the fullest and fear and failure were not in his vocabulary. He lived a life according to his values and morals. Few people accomplish their goals in life, he did so with an unwavering strength that made his “larger than life” goals not only attainable, but effortless. He was a Pilot, a Rancher, a Soldier, a Motel owner, a hunting and fishing enthusiast, a great provider, husband, father, grandfather, friend and so much more.
Tate was born on April 14th, 1929 in Burnet, Texas to Roy Francis and Maggie Lee Gunn. He Graduated from Georgetown High School in 1947. He attended Tarlton State University on a Football Scholarship and was a member of the Fencing Team during his time there. While attending Tarlton he broke his shoulder playing Basketball and was unable to continue playing football. His next adventure led him to the Texas Mexico border where he spent the next year patrolling the Rio Grande River on horseback, supporting the effort to help prevent the spread of Hoof and Mouth Disease. He then served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War in Japan. When he returned from Japan he ranched in North Texas and New Mexico. He then attended Texas A&M University in College Station where he completed his Bachelor’s Degree graduating in 1960. After graduating from A&M he bought a Super Cub airplane and flew to Alaska on a student Pilot’s license to visit his cousin who owned a hunting lodge in Umiat. Once he had his pilot’s license he Crop Dusted in Nicaragua and numerous states across the US. I was also informed he did something in Argentina but I have no idea what! In 1967 he went to Australia to look at Ranch Land. At the age of 40, he married Barbara Morris Sharpe, his Wife of 50 years on September, 30th 1969. In 1971 He and his Mother “Bob” Gunn went back to Australia to purchase a Ranch or “Cattle Station” as the Aussies call it. The Gunn Family collectively Relocated to Australia after the sale of the ranch in Georgetown Texas. Tate, Barbara and Family lived in Australia for 16 years. They then relocated to Rockport, Texas and bought a Motel. Tate and Barbara settled in Burnet Texas for the last few years of his life.
He was proceeded in death by his Parents Maggie “ Bob” and Roy Gunn. His sister Arla Van, brother Sam and Son Jon.
He is survived by his Sister Patsy Gunn Nephews Mike Spencer, Jack Spencer, Tommy Gunn and Bobby Sam Gunn. Wife Barbara Gunn, Children Steven Sharpe (Linda), David Sharpe ( Kathy), Jerry Sharpe, Susan Sharpe, Stacy Gunn Williams (Shay), Jill Gunn and daughter-in-law Brandy Gunn. Multiple Grandchildren and Great grandchildren.
He will always be a huge part of who we are and we will be eternally grateful that we had the honor to share his incredible life.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 26, 2019, at the Wolf Crossing Cemetery located between Granite Shoals and Kingsland. Condolences may be offered to www.clementswilcoxburnet.com. Arrangements entrusted to Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home Burnet, Texas
