JAMES SCHLINKE
A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, James Charles Schlinke, D.V.M., 75, passed away at his home in Laredo, Texas Aug. 9, 2019, after a bravely fought battle with cancer.
Born July 13, 1944 in Cuero, Texas to Walter and Lunes Bues Schlinke, Dr. Schlinke graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1966 and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1967, both from Texas A&M University. After working for the U. S. Department of Agriculture in Kerrville, Texas as a Veterinary Toxicologist over three years, he opened a private veterinary practice in Nordheim, Texas.
He was a published author of several veterinary toxicology articles while employed by USDA.
From a private practice, and a brief stint as a Realtor and Broker, Dr. Schlinke moved to West Texas, ranching in the Sanderson, Marathon, and the Big Bend areas of Texas. At one time this included managing over 100,000 acres. His love of the Big Bend area was evident by how many times he would “go to the West”, as he put it. For almost the last thirty years, he made his home in Laredo, Texas, where he was the Port Veterinarian for USDA until his retirement.
He will be remembered as being an avid football, basketball, and track fan supporting his two sons, Brent and Clay. Dr. Schlinke instilled in his sons a sense of hard work and the importance of a good education. He stressed that alcohol or drugs were not necessary to have a good time. As a matter of fact, he never took a drink. All he needed were his “dancing boots” to have fun.
Dr. Schlinke is survived by his wife, Ana, and their son, Ruben, of Laredo; Dr. Schlinke’s two sons, Brent and his wife Marina of El Paso and Clay and his wife Jessica of Blanco; six grandchildren, Jake, Rachel, and Tyler of San Antonio, Erik of El Paso, and Tristan and Meadow of Blanco. He is also survived by his beloved brother, Dennis “Bub” Schlinke, sister-in-law Carolyn, two nieces, one nephew, and several great and great great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at St Paul Lutheran Church in Nordheim, Texas.
Family and friends are invited to attend. There will be a reception immediately following the service for fellowship with the family.
