A.D. “Rick” Rychlik

A.D. “Rick” Rychlik passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 in Bryan, Texas. No services will be held at this time.

Rick was born on November 26, 1930 in Edge, Texas and spent his early years, along with his two brothers, Wayne and Bobby, roaming the surrounding woods and pastures enjoying the outdoor life that a small country community provided for three boys exploring the adventures of growing up. Rick spent his time honing the skills of the western cowboys he admired in the movies, perfecting the “quick draw” and sharp shooting, hunting, riding horses, roping, and working cattle at every opportunity when he wasn’t in school or helping his father in the Rychlik general store in Edge.

After his graduation from high school in Bryan, Rick attended Texas A&M University as a member of the class of 1952 and the Corps of Cadets. Upon his graduation from TAMU with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He was commissioned in the US Army Infantry for two years of active duty and served as a 1st Lieutenant in Korea in 1954. After the completion of his military obligations Rick returned home to Texas and began his professional career. Although his professional life was in research contract administration, his heart always remained with the life of the western cowboy.

Rick met his future wife, Judy in the spring of 1967 and soon introduced her to those cowboy activities he loved so much. They married in May 1968 and began a life together as a blended family with each having two children from prior marriages. Everyone who was a part of his life knew Rick could not be defined without including his “famous cow-horse” Spike. For many years those early mornings and long days when he and Judy loaded up the horses and went out to help friends with the roundups and cattle working on their ranches, especially when the situations provided some roping and cutting opportunities for Rick and Spike, were the best of days; followed by those times spent in the mountains of Ruidoso, New Mexico. Upon hearing of Rick’s passing most who knew him have commented that the image they will always hold of him is that of him on Spike out riding the pastures.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Verna Rychlik, and his brother Max Wayne Rychlik.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Judy Rychlik of Bryan, his daughter Susan Lamb of Costa Rica, his son Randall Rychlik of Georgia, stepdaughter Lori Somers Lee (spouse Patrick) of Lubbock, stepson Bret Somers of North Carolina; granddaughters Stephanie and Cynthia, step-grandsons John and Alex and four great-grandchildren; Brother and Sister-in-law Bob and Jeanette Rychlik of Bryan; Sister-in-laws Merilil Rychlik of Austin and Patricia Snyder (spouse Janis Ian) of Florida; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
