Steven Horne Roach
May 05, 1940 - June 13, 2019

FLORENCE - Steven Horne Roach, 79, husband of Candace W. Roach, died Thursday, June 13, 2019. He was born on May 5, 1940, in

Rutherford County, North Carolina, a son of the late Lois Horne and John Herman Roach.

He earned his bachelor’s degree at Lenoir-Rhyne University, his Master’s degree in Biology at Clemson University, and his doctorate in Philosophy at Texas A & M University. He was a research entomologist with the USDA until his retirement.

He loved sports, music, and was an outdoors enthusiast. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and tinkering. He played every sport and was an excellent golfer. He coached his two boys in every sport they participated, and was a past-president of the Junior Football League. He played church softball and basketball until he knees gave out.

An avid golfer, he was a member and past President of the Florence Country Club. In the week prior to his passing, Dr. Roach and his son, Mike, won the Member-Guest Tournament at the Club.

Dr. Roach was a member of Central United Methodist Church, and was a Mason.

He loved his precious sons, Michael Clay Roach (Lisa) of Greenville, SC, and Matthew Britt Roach (Elizabeth) of Pickens, SC. More than anything he loved his grandchildren, Peyton Roach and Granger Roach of Greenville, and Meredith Roach and Alex Roach, of Pickens. Also surviving is his sister, Irene Roach, of Henrietta, NC.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, John Herman Roach, Jr.

Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday, June 16, 2019, at Central United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the church commons area from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Entombment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery Mausoleum, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church for the Sunshine Class or Epworth Children’s Home; or to the Florence County Disabilities and Special Needs Foundation.
