Robert Bernard Krause, M.D.
June 16, 1923 - May 26, 2019

Robert Bernard Krause M. D. died in Plano, Texas, on May 26, 2019 at the age of 95.

Dr. Krause was born on June 16, 1923, in Burlington, Milam County, Texas, the oldest of seven children of Edwin Julius (E.J.) Krause and Minnie Lee Kleypas Krause. He was a sixth-generation Texan, from a German Catholic family that settled in the Republic of Texas in 1835, and a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas.

He was a graduate of Rockdale, Texas, High School, and president of the Class of 1941. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy at the beginning of World War II, and served as a Navy corpsman, attached to the 2nd Marine Raider Battalion. He served in the South Pacific, on Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and in occupied Japan. He attended Texas A&M University after the war, and received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1952. He practiced anesthesia in San Antonio for many years, and served as president of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists in 1968-1969.

He was married to Eugenia Rayner Pierce in Dallas on August 5, 1950. She preceded him in death in December 2016. He is also preceded in death by his parents, five siblings, and his great-grandson, Luke Altobelli.

Dr. Krause had an enduring interest in the propagation and growth of plants and flowers, and was the owner of Herman’s Orchids and the Diamond K Christmas Tree Farm. He was also interested in the history of medicine in Texas, and was a past president of the P. I. Nixon Medical Historical Library in San Antonio.

Dr. Krause is survived by his brother, Kirby Krause, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Frances Krause, Cecile Krause, Curtis Lee, J. Rush Pierce, and Patricia Ellington.

He is also survived by his five children and their families: Catherine and John Spencer, Christopher Krause and Lynn Morstead, Elisabeth and Michael Goodwin, Peter and Rosemary Krause, and Rayner and Kathleen Krause. His eleven grandchildren and their families are Mary Elisabeth Altobelli and her husband David, Edward Spencer, Patricia Goodwin, Anne Coy and her husband Matthew, Katherine Reese and her husband Aaron, John Krause, Joseph Krause, Christopher Krause, Jennifer Krause, Daniel Krause, and Heidi Krause. His five great-grandchildren are Jude Altobelli, James Reese, Daniel Reese, Adilynn Krause, and Tessa Coy.
