John Henry Kirkpatrick
June 19, 1935 - May 31, 2019

John Henry Kirkpatrick, age 83, went to be with his heavenly father on May 31, 2019. John was born in Youngstown, Ohio June 19,1935, the only son of William and Charlotte Kirkpatrick. He grew up in Springfield, New Jersey. He was a 1957 graduate of Texas A&M where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry and a commission in the US Air Force. Following his commission, he served in the Air Force Reserves and retired as a Major in 1982.
John moved to Alabama and lived in Athens, Montgomery, Elkmont and Huntsville. While in the Air Force Reserve, he owned and ran a farm in Elkmont, Al. He also served as a State Inspector of the Alabama Department of Agriculture.
In 1985, John obtained an MBA from University of Alabama in Huntsville and served as Church Administrator with the First Methodist Church of Huntsville Al.. He then served as Business Administrator for the First Prebyterian Church of Huntsville. He retired in 2008.
John enjoyed retirement as a gentleman farmer in Meridianville Al. where he raised a garden and had a very eclectic green house. He taught Sunday School for 25 years and was very active at Southside Baptist Church. He recently joined Whitesburg Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, of 38 years, Betty Parks Kirkpatrick; his daughter, Susan and her husband, Jerry Tuite (St. Petersburg Fl.); his son, William and his wife, deNay Kirkpatrick (Birmingham, Al.); his son, John and wife, Lori Kirkpatrick (Birmingham, Al.); his son, Jason and his wife, Sharon Kirkpatrick (Athens, Al.). He also has two step sons, Harry (Buz) Swaim and his wife, Chris (Canton, Ga.) and Joe Swaim and his wife, Renee (Roswell, Ga). He leaves 13 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 nieces; 2 nephews; and a host of caregivers and friends.
Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 8 at Laughlin Funeral Home in Huntsville. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 2 p.m. with Reverend Cecil Sewell presiding.
Burial service will be at Charity Cemetery in Hazel Green, Al.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Hospice Family Care and St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
