Wellington Leader December 31, 1970

Jake Tarter, 75, for nearly half a century a farm leader in the eastern Panhandle, became ill at the Dallas Nursing home where he was a resident and was dead on arrival at a hospital about 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 28.

He went to Dallas a month ago, and it was thought that he was doing well.

His death came four days after that of a brother, Brent C. Tarter, a long-time government professor at East Texas State University.

Jake Tarter came to Wellington first in 1917, and in the years immediately following, he is credited with laying out the first set of terraces run on a Collingsworth County field.

A graduate of Texas A&M University, he served 16 years as county agricultural agent of Wheeler County. This was a period filled with hard but fruitful work, and it brought him wide recognition for his knowledge in agriculture. Although he preferred to remain in the background, his advice or services were sough by many groups.

He resigned from the Extension Service in July 1945 and returned to his farm at Wellington.

One of those who brought the Collingsworth County Fee Fair into being, he long served as head of its agricultural and horticultural division.

A Baptist for many years, he was a long time Sunday School teacher.

In 1908, Mr. Tarter received his 50 year pin from the Wellington Masonic Lodge No. 763. He became a member of the Royal Arch Chapter here in 1921.

Jack Turner was born March 5, 1895, in Fannin County, the son of James B. and Martharet Luwertha Trimble Tarter.

He was married to Miss Reba Dale Atkins on September 5, 1925 at Wellington. She preceded him in death October 17, 1967.

Surviving Mr. Tarter are one son, Jack Tarter of Dallas, two brothers and four sisters: Bill Tarter of Wellington, J.B. Tarter of Akron, OH, Mrs. Dora Ryan of Arlington, Mrs. C. C. Hiett of Midland, Mrs. Dan B. Martin of Wichita Falls and Mrs. Harry Leonhardt of Kennedale.

Two sisters who lived here also preceded him in death, Mrs. John Trew and Mrs. E. M. Trew.
